so i have a huge d44 with driver side drop that im going to narrow down. i have a d60 for the rear that is 64" wide and i would like to narrow the 44 to the same. i just dont want to have to rock custom length inners. so my question is can i use the inners from a passenger side drop axle and just put them on opposite sides? such as an early blazer. im not too sure what the 44 i have came out of. its something around 74" wide right now.

sure - any d44 inners as long as they are the same spline as your carrier will work - chevy, waggy, J-10, ford

is your front end 8 lug right now?

only full width driver drop that i can think of came from a ford - possibly dodge

yeah its an 8 lug. i havent even taken it apart to check the splines.
it will most likely be 30 splines at the carrier...

if its 8 lug i can only hope it has the larger 297 or 760 u-joints - and thoes have to match (inners and outers) - some of the Early Broco front ends are said to have the smaller 260? series u-joints..

im only gonna run 33's so i should be good even with the smaller u-joints right? im gonna go crazy later but for now im trying to create my ultimate daily driver rig. d60 in rear (locked), d44 up front (limited slip), 33-12.50 trxus mt's.

Just FYI - I ran 33x12.5 Trxus MT's on a locked D30 and locked D44 for a whole year, beat the crap out of it on the rocks once or twice a month, drove it 80+ miles a day...and it's still going. You should be 'fine' with the setup you're describing. Never once broke anything on the trail...but I also have the larger 297x u-joints. That'd be a shame for you to do all that work and still have lame-ass u-joints up front.

74" is a wide friggin axle. What the hell did that come out of?

yeah i have no clue. it was free and in good shape so i wasnt passing it up. it is fucking huge though. i have a full fab shob at my disposal though so it should be pretty easy to modify. i just really dont want custom length shafts.

A lot of Toyota guys narrow Chevy D44s to about 64" (i forget the exact measurement) by shortening just the long side to Waggy width, so they run a short side Chevy axle shaft with a long side Waggy axle shaft (not sure if it's the 79down Waggy or the 80+ Waggy shaft, but they are pretty close in length). In other words, narrowing your short side to Chevy width (or maybe leaving it the same) and shortening your long side to Waggy width should get you right around 64".

To answer your direct question, it is NO problem to use a driver's side diff shaft in a passenger side diff (or vice versa) as long as the knuckle is the correct spacing from the diff.

oh yeha, how much lift do you have for the 33's. im thinking im gonna just run 4.5 with some severely cut fenders. will that work?

yup
for what its worth - that d60 will be a pig with thoes 33's

nothing like overbuilding eh?

im with ya - d44 up front, ford 9" in the rear with only 33" AT's

i just know that with me at the wheel i should make my xj retard proof.
thansk for all the replys guys. its all really helpful. im gonna look into those shafts brett was talking about.

and still only 2wd...

dont bother doing all that if your gonna leave in 260 joints

gotta love the true sound
the 2wd comment was aimed at xjranger. no expert, but since its 8 lug its probably the 297s.

code blue is my theme song. and how can i get around that pesky small u joint problem?
it all depends on what shafts you're going to put in it. i'm near certain that all Waggy and Chevy D44 shafts use the larger 297x joint (and compatible 760x). if you're going to put custom alloy shafts in anyways, they'll use the larger joints. The 260x caps are 1 1/16" diameter, and the 297x caps are 1 3/16" diameter if you need to check.

ok there just pouring it over, i see no rubbing action at all

Driverside drop will be a Ford if it's an 8-lug (3/4ton) ... the 260-X died in fullsize 1/2 tons in '72/73 all afterwards were 297-X ... the small u-joint 3/4 ton d44's were all closed knuckle.
hope that clears it up for ya.
