So I have been looking at the possibility of throwing in a XJ D44. I really like the idea and it could work with my budget but I now know that I will need to get a new carrier in order to run 4.56 or 4.88 gears. Now my stupid Arse question is dont certain lockers (ARB, detroit not sure who else) completely replace the carrier. And if Im right what all lockers do this i dont think no slips etc. replace the carrier. Thankx for all the help guys

The 44 carrier break is 3.73:1 and down (most if not all factory MJ/XJs came with this size carrier) and 3.92:1 and up.

Full case lockers (DetroitLocker, ARB, OX, Eaton E-Locker, ElecTrac) and the limited slips (True-Trac, Auburn, Track-Lok) replace the open diff carrier completely...and require resetting the ring & pinion gear mesh.

"Lunchbox" lockers (Aussie, Powertrax Lock Rite & No-Slip, Detroit EZ-Locker, Genuine Gear Quik-Lok) replace the side/spider gears inside an open diff carrier. The only one I know of that replaces the clutches/gears inside a track-loc carrier is a version of the Powertrax No-Slip. These all generally fit with only minor mods and don't require resetting the gears. If you are replacing the carrier for high # gears, you will have to reset anyway.

You can also run thick gears, which alows you to use the original carrier. Then to go cheap, get a lunchbox locker and call it good. BTW the thick gears can run about $50 to $75 more thana normal set. Which is about the price of a new empty carrier.
