d30 4.88 gears

Logans Metal Products (LMP) Great people top deal with!

It may look good, but its a total POS after that. The kit is awsome for someone that can't normally bend/weld and doesn't care about anything but looks, but it doesn't have any structure and will bend under any real abuse.Bought and welded one for a friend and he hasn't stop bitching since!

:bs:

Thats your $.02 but I have had no issues after several hard pulls and rock hits to the sides. I can fab with the best of them but for the price I got the bumper for, the steel would have cost more. The winch box on mine is all 3/16" steel and the frame plates go as far back and use as many holes as the Detours Backbone I took off. The outer ends of the bumper are the weak spot but mine has held up just fine to trail abuse.

The Logans is not a kit, it comes assembled/welded in bare metal, ready to mount. If you bought a kit that had to be welded up, I do not think it was the Logans.

X2, that would be the... poison spyder kit I think? I am fairly certain they aren't making them anymore.

* I was thinking the same thing... I just bought a new welder and am dying to try it out. But after I saw their prices I was impressed. Compared to an ARB or Warn that is pretty reasonable.
Everything is reasonable compared to ARB or Warn...nice lookin bumpers but they're both waaaaaaaaay overpriced. Check jcr and AJs as well.

^this.

I had my 35s on for two runs before the 4.88s gave up. Properly installed and proper break-in.

This was on stock shafts with x760s and full circle snap rings pushed by a lock-right. Measured .020" runout on the carrier where the gears broke.

YMMV depending on where you wheel. On the east coast, you need wheelspeed and momentum and the quick sudden shockloads tend to eat gearsets more than shafts. I never broke a stock shaft.
I got 4 runs on mine before this happened

Broke one tooth and cracked 6 others (you can see the cracks on the outside of the ring gear near the bottom. I was told that the aussie locker caused the stock carrier to flex causing the breakage. Luckily I caught it in time one more run and it probably would have looked like yours too. I would definitely not go with tall gears and an autolocker again on a D30. I'm getting a detroit full case locker to replace it. If you can't afford a full case locker for it do yourself a favor and leave it open for now till you can.

35's just like everyone else and moderate to difficult rock trails out at Rausch Creek in PA, like everyone else though I never push it all out because I knew the 30 is a POS. I had them done January of this year.

Wow! I set mine up myself and have around 3k street and trail with no issues. I'm running Yukons front, Nitro's rear

The Aussie and stock carrier is coming out in a month or so and will be replaced by a full case Detroit.

I had thought about Chryo-ing the R&P but didn't. I wonder if that would help keep the teeth longer?

Ya, breaking sux... But I don't think the 30 is a POS. It has its place and limitations. I "only" run 33's and have 4.88s and a lockright in front. I have changed my ball joints twice and upgraded shafts in the ten years I've had it. No other issues. Mine's treated me good. I don't flog it, but I'm not afraid to get on it a bit to get over an obstacle. If I ever jump up to 35s, I may feel different...

So with 4.88's you say no aussie locker?

I got 4.88's, Ox with 30 spline alloy shafts, 35's.

Ran Hammers, Rubicon and other various runs with no issues. I almost always run it open, only using the Ox a couple of times.

They say the Ox cover and Ox Carrier do a lot to strengthen the set-up... but I am no expert... that's just what I hear, and it make sense to me.

I would probably venture at this point after this experience to say no aussie locker in the 30 at all. The case/carrier/ring gear combo just doesn't seem strong enough to handle the stress of anything harder than moderate wheeling with 35's. A full case locker would be a really good idea. Building yourself a D44 instead would be an even better idea though. The D30 and D35 has the same size ring gear 7.5" and you know what people say about the D35. Now after this I don't have much good to say about the D30 with the aussie on 35's at all except it's not working out so good for me.

Interesting... I wouldn't know the first thing about a D44 build/install. I can beat my way along with most things on the xj... but axles, gears, and lining things up maybe a different story.

I kind of feel like if I'm going to spend the $ for a locker on my d30, I would be better off putting that into a D44. Or something. What would be the best donor vehicle to dig a D44 out of? (flame suit on)

Probably a Waggy or a early Bronco.

I'm sticking with the D-Turdy, I got too much in it to move on now! The full case locker will give me piece of mind and can handle the slippery rocks here on the East Coast.

If your going to go with the 44 you want to get a HP44 as with any front axle. Donors are hard to come by you might have to do more research first, whatever vehicle you find it in it will most likely need a new bracket kit welded on it unless you are lucky enough to find on that was put in an XJ,TJ or ZJ already. I would say get yourself an ARB or a Detroit if your going to keep the 30.
