Custom yoke style SYE for the 242 or 231 done.

On a side note, what is the consensus on going all the way back to the bearing for 'support'? Is it that important or should I not bother and cut it off after the spline contact?

Not going all the way back to the bearing leaves it the same as the RE hack and tap so no problem there. What you do get going all the way back is not only support for the bearing, but it stabilizes the yoke itself. This will leave it less prone to the wearing out of the splines I have seen on the RE kits and also prevent the leaks they get.
Just my thoughts on why I did it this way so make your own mind up. ;)

I just did this conversion on another XJ that could not get rid of some vibes after fitting a RE Flange type hack and tap. There was some spline wear on the output shaft after the 4wd shop that installed it did not bother to cut the shaft anywhere near straight! But even after doing the cut correctly there was still some but a good improvement. Anyway I converted it to this yoke style and happy to report that with the extra support from the bearing, that the flange does not give, it is now vibe free.
Also noted that I have changed the seal specifications that I had on my site. Found out they were not quite right compared to what I had in mine as his leaked after a short time. SO the new specs and all the data I could get off the seal in now in the write up.

Hoping that someone can find the same seal in the US as well when using a RE seal housing.
HTML clipboard The seal I used was bought at Bearing Wholesalers here in Australia. Their product number is #402896N with a description of SEAL 150.232.37 TB. It measures a outer dimension of 59.30 mm ( 2.335" ) and a 38.1 mm ( 1.5" ) shaft size. The data on the seal lip itself are: TB2 232 150 37, TTO, E962 3.
Please let me know if anyone finds a seal to match.

Thanks Marcus...mine has been leaking again and about time to change it. I may need you to send me some. ;)

so you need this seal as well? i thought you just needed the RE part for the older cases?
For older cases is the seal I am talking about here that use the RE seal housing. On newer ones it depends if you want the extra support off the bearing or not. Can just fit the yoke outside of the factory seal on the 96+.

Thought I had only sent the seal I used pre SYE didn't I?
For you mate though I will send a SYE seal this week to you for all the things you send me, it is the least I can do. :)
Got some more Australian 4wd DVD's for you saved up too.

You sent me the one that had 2 lips on it that fit the RE seal piece. The one I had originally sourced locally was a single lip design and it tended to leak.

I'm hoping you have found a better one as they both tend to leak a little.

righto, i'll be calling RE later today for that part.

ordered the bearing seal+rubber seal from RE, $70ish after shipping and the yoke was a tad over $100 shipped from powertrain industries. the guy at RE was pretty dumbfounded when he asked what I was doing for a yoke.

You wont be able to use the seal from RE as their flange is bigger on the seal running area than the yoke you just ordered.

Wrong...the outer diameter of the yoke is smaller on the piece you will be using versus the RE piece. The yoke you will us is 1.500" in diameter, the RE piece is larger, hence needing to source a different seal.

im confused as to where this seal goes... i thought it was part of the RE bearing retainer... the yoke needs a seal? any source for this besides austrailia?

This is where the seal goes. The diameter of the yoke being used is smaller than that that comes with the RE kit, therefore the different seal is needed.

My first seal is a Federal 203013, which has the following specs:

Outer diameter: 2.332"
Bore: 2.327"
Shaft: 1.500"

This seal has a single sealing lip on the inside. The one Marcus specs out has two sealing lips and does work better. Both Federal and Chicago Rawhide have decent search engines to find different seals. Maybe you could find an equivalent here in North America to the one that Marcus has found.
