Custom yoke style SYE for the 242 or 231 done.

OK I am going to show my complete lack of mechanical knowledge. Could I use the front Yolk out of a 242 case and put it on the rear of my 242?

Well, of course PNP wouldn't let me take my yoke in
mad.gif
, so I had to pull another front yoke from a 231 (without air tools, or course).

I went row, by row through all the domestic cars... here's what I found:

1980-1982 Ford Thunderbird
They didn't have any T-Birds older than 85, so I can only confirm that 85, 86, & 87's do not have the right yoke.

1982-1983 Lincoln Continental
There were no Continentals there.

1988-1992 Lincoln
I looked under 3 random Lincolns from that period - one was missing the transmission, and the other 2 had the wrong yoke.

1980-1982 Mercury Cougar XR-7
There were no Cougars from that period (or anything close)

1991-1993 Oldsmobile Bravada
Surprisingly, there wasn't a single Bravada there.

OK, so in researching this, I think I've realized something (and correct me if I'm wrong)...

The rear output shaft on the 231 is 27 spline and 1.1760".

The output shafts on the transmissions listed in this thread are 27 spline and 1.1720", but as some people have mentioned, a slip yoke isn't designed to fit the shaft as tight as a fixed yoke, so the slip yoke ends up being 1.1760".

Some catalogs list slip yokes by the size of the output shaft, not the true measurement of the yoke itself.

Now, on somewhat of a side note, the Dana 35 pinion is a true 1.1720" and obviously, since it's not a slip yoke, there is no play built in, which is why it won't fit.

Could you heat the D35 pinion yoke and freaze/cool the t-case shaft
and get it to fit? Or are they just that different?

Wrong style yoke.....

I'm aware this is really an exercise in mental aerobics, but seriously, just get the right yoke and be done with it.

I am just wondering what models of 1988-1992 Lincoln they are on. The yard I am heading to has several 89-91 Continentals and if they are correct I will pick one up for $7.00 and give it a shot.

'88 and up Lincoln Continentals are Front Wheel Drive. Try '87 and older.

Otherwise, look under Town Cars.

They have lots of Town Cars as well from the 88-92 model years as well. Will those work?

They're rear wheel drive but that's all I know.

I belive he said they were front wheel drive too. I dont know tho, trying to find a place on the net to find specs on it but had no luck. I will be going out soon to my local PNP to find one since i will also be doing this really soon

I don't believe a Town Car was ever a FWD.

This is what the yoke should look like:

From this eBay auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Corvette-Styled-NEW-U-Bolt-27-spline-Yoke-GM-Chevrolet_W0QQitemZ120109514637QQihZ002QQcategoryZ33733QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

But I bought mine directly from Tom Woods for under $60 with this part number: #2-3-27ZCV-131

All those car mentioned are said to have the same transmission as the Corvette yoke but that does not mean that they are running the same yoke. Hence why none found so far.

The eBay auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chev-27-spline-input-NP208C-for-parts-slip-yoke-output_W0QQitemZ180108319764QQihZ008QQcategoryZ46104QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Mentions that it has a 27 spline input shaft so wonder if the output has the same count on a NP208C transfer?

Cant quite tell if it has the U bolt yoke or not??

Gojeep after reading your write up it seemed that you used the RE1801 kit with the same cutting, tapping, etc specifications that they use in their instructions. I have a NP207 which RE makes a bearing spacer, RE1802, for use with their RE1801 kit. It seems to me that this method will work for the NP207 and would be a good option for those looking for a solid hack and tap SYE for the NP207. I just wanted a clarification if you or anyone thinks or knows if this will work on the NP207 as it requires a bearing spacer that can be bought from RE part number RE1802. Thanks.

Sorry too late for edit. Would the bearing spacer even be required with the yoke since the extra length of the yoke may negate the need of the extra distance? Any one who has put the RE1801, RE1802 on the NP207 feel free to chime in if the spacer is needed or not if the yoke is used.
