Cowl induction SMOG

I am considering this and was wondering if anyone has had any issues with CA smog after doing the mod with the cone filter in the cowl.

I would want to take out the intake box and relocate the battery there to make room for a york OBA system.

When I pulled my airbox out (put in cone filter where the box was, not in the cowl), I couldn't find anyone in San Jose willing to smog it. They all insisted that it had to have the stock box and that I put the box back in before they would even look at it.

My setup won't help you because it uses the stock box with a tube to the cowl, but no issues. It has been smogged twice.

you have to buy a kit that has the ca smog sticker on it, k&n and a few others sell them but it won't go into the cowl. Just smog it with the box and swap it out afterwards.

Ok, this seems to put the brakes on the york compressor and relocating the battery.

I was just trying to think long term about my build. I guess I will go with a high flow electric compressor and build a removable bracket in the stock air box location.

I guess I should mention I have an '01. The details for the '01 state it is not CA legal. It must have to do with the additional smog stuff in mine.

Really 2 options for me. remove a homebrew intake when smoging or tap the stock box.

I just thought if you used a CA legal cone and maintained the stock connections I would be fine, I guess not.

I just put this system on mine and have to smog it next month. We will see if it makes it past inspection.....

Says it can not be used in CA

Are all cone style filters illegal here in CA? I know a lot of people run them, does everyone just swap the stock box back in for smog.

maybe the york compressor plans are out?

Im not sure where your link came from, but I guess the intake is different? The first link was CA legal

Edit: oh, I see. You could modify the first one a little bit to fit and it would still have the sticker. If you get a tech that really cares they would look it up and see its a problem, but most wouldnt

Yeah my link is for the later xj model. The one Don posted is good but not for my year. $250 is a lot to spend and I still might have an issue.

I think I will do it on the cheap and swap it out for smog

If it's for ca use it has to have a c.a.r.b number if not u must keep stock application for smog. It's pritty cut and dry almost all intakes are only 49 states legal only a few places make ca intakes,

Good to know thanks.

So are they going to care there is a 3" hole in the fire wall during inspection?

I figure a little duct tape could take care of this. Or if you wanted to get really fancy some of that aluminum backed stuff they actually use on ducts..

no, they only care that it doesnt pollute while its running, doesnt matter if its in danger of completely burning down as far as the state is concerned

edit: actually they only care that it has CA smog legal parts and burns clean. its clearly not as much about the polluting than the $$$ from smog and CARB

You won't be able to fit a very big cone in the cowl area.

You could be super fly and try to fit it next to your HVAC crap...

Posting some information regarding the cold air intakes for the Xjs. The rules are bit confusing at times, but here they are.

87 - 90 4.0L has a heat stove, a heat tube, and a thermostatically controlled air filter box. Only CARB approved parts may replace this air cleaner set-up.

91 - 95 have no restrictions on cold air intakes as long as ALL the original smog control hoses are present and installed in the correct manner. (This rule applies to all pre-95 vehicle without a thermostatically controlled air cleaner set-up.)

96 - 01 (All OBDII vehicles) must have CARB approved parts installed.

Starting this year, the state is really cracking down on techs for not doing smogs correctly. One of their new tricks is the state is running bait cars through the smog shops with aftermarket parts installed and phoney CARB approval stickers attached. Several guys have been nailed by this car and the word is out. Just because the sticker is there doesn't mean it is for that vehicle. A good smog tech will run the number on the CARB exemption sticker to double check that the number and the vehicle match.

seems like using a phony sticker should be like a fake ID. Shouldnt be the tech or establishments fault for not running the numbers to be sure if they match, just presenting one that says its good should be enough. If you want to fake it, go ahead and risk being caught/fined by the cops
