Converting 2wd to 4wd

I am hoping I am putting this is in the correct place. We have a 2001 Grand Cherokee that we want to convert from 2wd to 4wd. It has the 4.0 and i'm not sure what trans. It does have some tranny issues, so I would like to use an auto trans, transfer and front axle from an XJ. Has any one done this swap? My main concern is computer stuff, otherwise it seams like it would be a pretty straight forward bolt in. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

That would be a WJ - I am not sure what kind of computer trouble you'll run into but it probably won't be fun or easily solved. The bolt pattern on the hubs and the width of the axle and mounts are also different from an XJ so you should get the front axle out of a WJ (99-?? grand cherokee) instead of an XJ one. You would probably be better off using an appropriate WJ donor for the transmission to avoid electrical issues, you won't gain the reliability of the AW4 from an XJ but it will bolt in.

As alway with this type of hack I would drive or drag A 4WD doner home of the SAME year/model/engine.
This can save so many compatibility problems. With mismatch year, engine etc. PLus you will have all the little parts on hand to make it a sweet looking gob and not just backyard hack. Important to me anyway.

you should definitely find a WJ that is 4wd and is being parted out. Check jeepforum.com Look in the classifieds and under "Part-out"
