Markings are:
405
008

So can anybody tell me anything about these markings?

Can you provide a picture that looks more like gun parts than a sneezed-on lens of a 4-year olds camera?

Often times the last few digits of the serial # is stamped in other places. Same #s?

Duh!

Thanks for connecting the dots for me :dunce:

The tip of the barrel needs to be crowned, it's *ever so slightly* out of round, it looks like the gun was dropped on it's head at some point. Maybe that's why my granddad never could shoot a deer :laugh3:

Deer hunting with a .32???

Buahahahahaha!!

Simpler times man, simpler times.

I suppose so.......

He did most of his hunting with a bow and arrow though!

(still didn't have much more luck!)

It's called a challenge. Around here if you go in the woods you will almost certainly kill a deer. I don't see why people use the high powered guns it seems too easy for them. i mean hell some of the hunters I know get 4 or 5 deer a season.

No, it's called a quick and humane kill. A .32 isn't going to give you either of those on a deer no matter how good of a shot you are.

Isn't that an oxymoron?

Not really, I once shot 21 Deer in two days and on another occasion 14 in one night. It's my job.
Use the largest fastest bullet you can use, that doesn't mess up too much meat.
If you use a smaller caliber, you can compensate by placing your shot really well. Close to the backbone in the neck, will put a deer down fast. There legs turn to rubber and if you are lucky they don't even spontaneously breath, more than a few times. It doesn't get much more humane than that.
My ethics and morales tell me Deer are a harvest, just like any other crop. If you need to harvest them, do it as quickly and humanely as possible.
I'm sometimes tasked to thin a Deer population in a certain area. All the Deer, Bucks, Does, fawns and yearlings.
I shoot the fawns first, then the yearlings, them the Bucks, then the Does. Anybody care to venture a guess why?
I'm not out there shooting for sport and I'm not a psycho doing it for pleasure. I do it because it needs to be done and I'm good at it. I do take some satisfaction from a good shot and a quick death. I won't even shoot, if the Deer isn't standing just right, if there is any chance I may wound instead of kill. I'm not out there to make it more sport (for the hunter, surely not for the Deer) by using primitive weapons. I'm much more likely to pass up a trophy animal or a really well formed Doe. I hold a short wake by every animal I kill and say a prayer.
The object of the whole exercise is to help the game population not destroy it.

Well put.
Thank you Mr.Mud.

I agree that if you're going to take a deer down do it fast... I doubt I'll be doing so, too much of a bleeding heart and all :laugh3:

I can guarentee you one thing about the old man though, he wasn't in it for sport. He proably used the 32 just because he had it with him at hte time and he most likely used the bow and arrow becuase it was cheaper to miss than a gun! He grew up in the depression, he'll do anything to save a buck (no pun intended). :laugh3:

If I was hungry enough, I'd use most any means to put some food on the table. Poachers favor wire snares and cross bows.
I was once stalking through a thicket, trying to come into the meadow down wind of a small herd. Came face to face with a two year old Buck, he put his head down. I butt stroked him in the head. If he would of ran he would have been OK, he decided to attack. I broke an antler off and knocked a piece of his skull loose.
If anybody doubts my tale, I still have his skull in my trophy case, I'll take a picture.
I don't keep too many trophies, just the animals with a specific significance. First Deer, an especially hard hunt, sick or deformed animals. Mostly as a tribute or a training aid.

Not that I doubt you, but you can't claim pictures and not pony up, so...

Let's see it

Ha! I assumed you meant your rifle butt, not your own, but what condition was the 'butt' in after knocking the crap out of that buck?!

Composite stock, not much chance of damaging it.
I'm glad I didn't write, I butt stroked him until I fractured his skull, which sounds a lot kinkier.:)
