Colorado Chapter Monthly Trail Runs

Seriously though. If I was older, or that truck was nicer. No way it would have happened. Doable? Very. Smart? Not in the slightest.

Slaughter House was little more than a dirt road with a mud pit at the end from what I remember. I'm also pretty sure they closed the mud pit off.

Considering there is a bypass for all the obstacles I'd say Chinaman is a good one. When we ran it during COFest a few years back I'm pretty sure one of the XJ's that went only had a 2" lift and 30's. I know my JK was only running metric 35's at the time, so like a 33.5-34" tall tire.

Red Cone is very family friendly, and it offers some great views once you get to the top. It also allows you to start on 285 and end on I-70, which means Tommy Knockers is on the way home.

As for trails north of I-70, meh pretty common practice around here for you to forget about us northerners. There are some good light duty trails around the Estes Park area. I will say that ever since LHC was shut down the Bunce/Plane Crash area is crowded as all hell. Worse yet, they blocked off the optional trail at Iron Clads so its now just a loop. There are others though that usually aren't as busy.

Miller Rock is a fun one with a great little area to stop for lunch

Rock Creek is a good little trail tucked in behind Allens Park, nothing challenging per se but with some nice scenery and great off creek camp sites

Of course MSV/Coney are very popular trails with lots of water crossings and good views. There are even a few "challenging" spots to play on as you transition onto Coney

You can also go up to the HWY-14 area for some decent trails.

Moody Hill and Crystal are two of my favorites. Lots of scenery and a good playground area for the built rigs to play on, I always run them consecutively.

Kelley Flats is also fairly popular. Heart Attack hill can induce a bit of pucker factor to the feint of heart and the chutes playground is a good diversion for the built rigs on an otherwise tame trail. One year I think I ran the chute 6 times in a row with my YJ. I was up there with a bunch of guys in lifted Powerstrokes and they took turns riding in my YJ up the chute.

For me a good day trip for scenery and lunch along the trail is Rock Creek, followed by Johnny Park Road, then Pole Hill Road, and then Estes Park for dinner/beer. Bear in mind though that I tend to blast through these easy trails and also camp in the area and make a full weekend out of it.

Looking at our schedule, Red Cone will not be open before July 1st. We will have to either swap dates, or schedule an alternate. I prefer to keep an open mind, because we do live in Colorado.

One of the requirements for an official chapter event, is that at least one B.O.D. member be present for that event. It is up to the B.O.D. to show up, or cancel that event.

Looking at the list of monthly runs, I don't see any trails North of I-70. For the Chapter Monthly Runs, I (personally) would like to see a run closer to the FoCo/Loveland area. Putzer has already mentioned a trail that is North of I-70.

I don't care if you show up in a clapped-out 4-Runner, especially on Adopt-a-Road days.

I might try to make that run, it just depends on how things pan out with the new rig. If I do go it'll have a 4.5" long arm lift on stock open/open axles and 31" BFG AT KO1's.

Also, DutchVDub, thanks for the info. I grew up wheeling the front range from Pueblo to south Denver. I'm just getting familiar with the I-70 corridor. I have family in Cheyenne, so I would be up for some northern Colorado wheeling.

As for the three trail route you posted, I may steal that for later this summer. My wife loves Estes and every year we rent a cabin with a hot tub and drop the kid off at my parents.

Why not use the Tacoma? They have a pretty high tow rating after all.
