Pretty sure there were fewer VW Scirocco's produced and there is still a rather large Scirocco following out there. Still plenty of FSJ's out there being built and wheeled too and they're not only a lot older, but total rust magnets. I don't think you have to worry about the million plus XJ's going away anytime soon. Hell, I still see the super sweet oddball Pacer every now and then.

its an enormous picture of a pinzgaur -- swiss military vehicle (oxymoron?), portal axles, tiny little engine, seats 12. They usually have a canvass cover over the back for the benches. Buddy of mine wheeled one for years, and it went virtually everywhere, but most of the time on 3 wheels, since it doesn't have anything jeep folks might consider "articulation". My friend sold his to a dude in Telluride that put tracks on it and gives snow cat tours now...

Neither the Pinzguar or the Unimog flex. But then again, they do go almost anywhere you point them. Different solution to a similar challenge. In both cases, they are first and foremost, Military Vehicles.
Small Diesel engines are the norm for Euro vehicles. And with the price of fuel who can blame them...
And, do not discount the Swiss. Switzerland is on of if not the most heavily armed, per capita, Nation in the World. Mandatory Military Service and you keep the weapon you trained with when you leave. The entire country would first disappear into the nearly unbelievable tunnel system they have in place and them would take you out via guerilla tactics. Service is compulsory for every male 18 and older and the females are encouraged to participate.
Just because the are neutral, do not think, even for a minute, that they are unarmed...

My buddy's pinz was not a diesel, by the way, just a tiny little gas engine. It was stock, though.

Not really. Although the idea to create and market a 'generic' 4x4 platform has crossed my mind a few dozen times. Box frame in short and long models, XJ or JK style bodies, mounts for a V8 engine, decent axles out of the box, etc. Basically make it a blank slate for anyone to build what they want out of.

2012 Passat TDI police car.
Belle Meade (TN) PD was looking for a more fuel efficient option with lower overall cost to buy and maintain. They currently have a fleet of Chargers, but their small town has very little need for powerful pursuit vehicles as they only have 65 miles of paved road and the majority of their city is upscale residential.
I found this interesting:
"....during testing on the nearby historic Natchez Trace Parkway, Eads says they drove a slick-top version of the Passat on a 248-mile trip, achieving an astounding 54.486 mpg. A follow-up test with another Passat using a Whelen Justice 44-inch LED light bar yielded a still-amazing 50 mpg. Clearly, the fuel economy advantages of using the diesel platform are evident."

Funny thing too, I bet it actually has a higher top speed than the Charger too. Nope, most bad guy's aren't going to get away from that thing. A high top speed and seemingly never ending fuel tank combine for a sweet pursuit car.

Google images shows both car's speedo's topping out at 160mph.
Generally speaking, the problem with police car interiors is the barrier/cage. They limit how far back the front seats will go. The Charger is pretty roomy, but the thickness of the door panels and the low roof make them less roomy than the Crown Vic. The Passat interior photo with the cop gear installed (doesn't show the computer so take that into account as they tend to overlap the passenger's leg/lap area) looks much more cramped.
The Passat interior would be better suited for a Police car if they could make it column shifted and lose the center console so that the radio/unitrol/MDC could be mounted there like the CV's and Chargers.
The Chargers were definitely fun to drive, but if you arrested anyone 6' tall or 230+ lbs or both....... it was a real challenge to get them into the back seat, and then back out of the damn car. The sloping roof line of the Charger really made that rear door entry opening much too small. Lots of blind spots in those Chargers too.

Plus you can tune them easier! My buddy has a tuned TDI Jetta and driving like a jackass he gets 42 mpg.
