chrysler 8.25 vs ford 8.8

that's what i like to hear

I have a 8.25 27 spline lockright, 33" tires 6inch lift. I go to moab utah at least 6 times a year. I've done potato salad, behind the rocks, cliff hanger.... and I've never had a problem with it. I will upgrade some day when I go to 35's just to over build it, but have been and am very happy with the 8.25, even the 27 spline.

I ran a 27 spline 8.25 on 33" Swampers and it never broke. The only time I was easy on it was while on the road, although I did do burnouts & donuts in the XJ from time to time on the wet pavement. Oh, it was welded, too, and I never had the first problem out of it. The guy that bought it from me is still running it (on 35's now, IIRC) and it's still going strong. And yes, it went through Tellico, as well as Beasley Knob, Uwharrie, etc.

I'm not saying that the arguments here are not valid for the use of Dana 60's and whatnot, but the simple fact of the matter is that the 8.25" rear (in either form-27 or 29 spline) is a very stout axle if someone without fab skills is looking for a serious upgrade over a Dana 35.

I've run 31s, 33s and 35s on my 27spline 8.25 with a Powertrax in the rear. I carry an extra shaft but never had to use it. I can tell you for sure, that the 8.25 with 33s is a safe bet. I can also tell you with some confidence that the 8.25 with 35s is doable. The reason I found this thread was I was looking for folks running 36s on it. And unfortunately, I haven't heard anyone say they do )c: I've never had a problem with my trusty ole' 8.25 and I've never seen one break either. But if you want to hear about them breaking talk to MattyJ in the SoCal chapter. He told me he's broke 2 or 3. But he's a friggin' wheeling maniac :scottm: IMO. PEACE !
