Will i need a case spreader to pull the carrier out of a 12 bolt?

Guy i know bought a rebuilt assembly that sat outdoors covered for a few years, the carrier has loose rust where it wasnt submerged in gearlube.

Wanna clean this up before it's installed in his Cutlass.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think you ever need a case spreader to get a carrier out. There's a few tricks to getting them out without one. I don't think a 12B is special and would require one though.

You could put a rag and feed it between the RG and pinion which would push the carrier out.

I've wrapped a strap around the carrier and used a comealong attached to something else to help pop it out. I'd keep the bearing caps on with the bolts threaded in a bit to keep the carrier from dropping out.

I've always just turned the carrier till the hole in the side was in a good spot, then stuck the handle to my breaker bar into it and pried till it popped out. Occasionally this requires a bit more enthusiasm but it's always worked in the end.

Getting the carrier back in without a case spreader might be another story. I've always had an easy time getting things to come apart and more trouble putting it back together.

I did some Goggling and found a rebuild with pics in PDF. Thanks guys..

First met this local guy when i was recommended to him for Jeep repairs, turns out he's got a car addiction and has 5 more mint classics in his warehouse. Looking forward to maintaining his collection, i'll just need to familiarize myself with some of this stuff again.
