Cherokee Special Service Package?

I bought a 1998 Cherokee, former Fish and Wildlife vehicle and am trying to find out what features this came with, i.e. gear ratio, what axle and so on. Anyone here have any idea, I have found nothing but sites mentioning the package, but not what it came with. Thanks for the help. :helpme:

Does it have the extended idle option? Hard to say what axle you have without actually looking at it. Do you have rubber floors? Column shift? Roll bar?

You can request a build sheet from Jeep.

For a later model, 4.0, you'll likely have 3.07 gears with a 5 speed, and 3.55 with an AT. Mine had the tag on the cover and a sticker on the tube denoting the gearing until the last few years when I apparently knocked them off. Easy enough to tell what axle you have by looking.

I don't think the 97+ ever had column shift or roll bars. The axle will be a D30 up front and a D35 or 8.25 in the rear. See above link.

I have the extended idle, rubber floor mats, auto with the shifter in the center console. It has a hitch on it, but it looks in pretty good shape, I am thinking it might be an aftermarket. Before I left for deployment, I tried looking for any tags or anything else to identify it and cant find anything. I was trying to find out the rest of what I got so I could order everything for when I get home, guess not. Thanks for the heads up on the build sheet hbs97xj, I didnt know I could do that, I will look into that, that should tell me everything I need to know.

Jeep recycles the codes periodically, so it may list options you don't have, but I got mine a few months ago and it seems to be quite accurate.

Does your speedo read to 100 or 120 MPH? Does it say something like "certified" in the center?

120 and I dont believe it says certified. I only had it for a few weeks before I went on deployment, so I might be wrong. My buddy got to go home early, I am waiting on him to send me a picture of the axle, will make everything easier on me and keep me from having to ask these questions on here.

I don't know the specifics of the package, but the FSM says only "police package" XJs had Extended Idle. Type "Police package site:naxja.org" into Google and see what you find. A quick check suggest factory skids, 242 transfer case, ABS and D35 rear axle (not quite ideal to me), factory recovery points, stiffer springs and shocks, bigger brakes, and tow package (hitch and trans cooler). But, I've also read there really wasn't a standardized package. The build sheet might be the best bet until you get home to poke around more.

The VA state police had quit a few of the XJ's. Most that I saw on this side of the state were black or dark blue. The forestry service XJ's were a fugly color of green and they are all over the place still.

If yours is a former VADGIF service vehicle it may have been used by a game warden so it would have the police package.

What color is your XJ?

As far as I know the gearing on the service XJ's is the same as a civilian model, 3.07 manual, 3.55 auto

Mine would be a fugly color of green. From what little bit I have been able to look up (internet sucks underway) they where equiped with heavy duty cooling, better rear brakes, trailer hitch, 5 extra HP, extended idle and most of the time a D35.

Got my build sheet. Stuck with a D35. What would be the funnest way to ruin one of these?

take it wheeling. It will ruin itself in short order.

I killed 3. You might as well just plan for the 8.8 swap when you get back.

thanks for your service.

I don't know, I think it all depends on how you treat it.

D35 - Lockright, D30 - Lockright, stock gears, 29" tires. Works just fine.

Im heading home on leave as soon as I get back, driving from Virginia Beach to northern Michigan, will hit a few junkyards up along the way and see if I cant find any deals on anything. Thanks for the help on here guys, theres a lot of simple things I gotta ask on here simply because my command normally only allows us to browse .org sites. Luckily for me, I found this site just before deployment, y'all have been a big help.

Well since it is "fugly" green then its a former FS vehicle. They are all over Roanoke, I see a few everyday. There are two local "XJ" only dealers that pic these up at auction every chance they get. I got a call from one of them that had a 01 FS 2-door with only 5k on the odometer. Unfortunately some one took a poop all over the front seats and it sat for many years un used. He bought it at auction and swapped interiors with another 2-door. He wanted 12k for the Jeep so I laughed and walked. It was neat to see a XJ with so few miles on it though.

Mine has 187,000 on it, but other than what I believe to be a faulty CPS, it still runs great. Has a little bit of rust on the rocker panels, but I am gonna try getting that fixed over New Years. I really like the rubber interior on mine too. Glad I got that build sheet, I never even noticed I had the skid plates and hooks.
My car died right when I was going on leave before deployment and no place around had a starter in stock, so instead of taking my time and buying a jeep after deployment, I bought the first one I found that ran and I could afford. I figured, its got the towing package, it must have the 8.25, wrong..

Yeah, I think that will be my first choice. I dont like the idea of driving around on a D35 with 187K on it even if it doesnt have bigger tires on it yet.

I killed one, stock open on 31's
killed another when the pinion nut let loose, dragged the pinion in the full detroit. That was on 34's
broke three teeth of the ring gear on another, on the street, shifting from 2nd to third while in a left turn at an intersection.

and thus ended my D35 experience.

Is your c clip or not? Cause if not I have a full detroit locker for you in my basement. Seriously. PM me if you want it. It's fully functional, just has some neat markings on the case from the pinion incident. I posted pictures some time ago on here if you're ambitious enough to search.

I'm good, but thanks. Besides, I store my XJ up in Alaska. No access to it.
