CB installs lets see em!

Is that for a Cobra 75WXST? That's the one I'll be installing.
Billy

I did something similar to that a while back, but wanted to keep the transmitter out of the centre armrest storage bin if at all possible. As it turns out, there's just enough room to fit the transmitter in the front part of the armrest and still get the bin back in:

The connector for the handset runs out of the front of the armrest:

And finally, you can hang the handset where it's accessible to the driver but still not in the way:

There're a couple more photos of the install here, and kind of a nice side effect of this is that it's central enough and there's suitable reach from the handset cord that anyone in the vehicle can work the CB - useful if you need to be doing something at the same time as you want to talk to someone. One change I would recommend making, however, is moving the hanger for the handset up out of the kick panel and into the blank spot directly above it in the lower instrument panel. This is how I'm running it in the current XJ, and it makes it a lot easier to hear the thing if you're not running an external speaker.

I looked into those compact cobras, the size is nice, and having all the control at your hand.

but at more money with less features, i decided I wanted the RF gain and opted for the bigger setup.

Understood. And to be honest, I'm not disappointed in the least with its performance - but it's definitely not a unit you'd want to pick if you're looking for something to modify. My main concern was not leaving anything on display that might be attractive to thieves since I used to have to work in some pretty unpleasant parts of town. Same with the GPS - if it's needed, it's mounted; if not, it's in the apartment.

Also very understandable.

Here's my cb. Cut a piece of aluminum to fit between sun visors. Drilled holes in the end and screwed it in place with the existing visor supports. Painted it flat black to match cb. Works real well.

For all you guys who made your own tail light mount. Two questions:

1. I made one up lastnight and was wondering if you just used the stock tail light bolt and added another sheet metal scew or just attached it on its own.

2. After you painted the mount did you sand the mount where it butts up with the body for a better ground? How did you ground it out?

1. Yeah i used the template thats floating around here somewhere and used the stock taillight screw and another self tapping sheet metal screw higher up. I'm running a rather large firestick and it gets some force put on it while cruising on the highway, but the mount stays put

2. when i painted mine, i left tape where i would be touching the body. I doubt it matters, seeing as i didn't sand down the body, but i did it anyways cuz it couldn't hurt and its not like anyone can see that part anyways. I get fine reception by the way.

hope that helps,

Seth

you'd almost think you were a V.F

Head unit crapped out, CB goes in its place.

There's a small external speaker mounted behind that blank space in the dash next to it. Works great. The hardest part was routing the antenna cable through the dash.

In place of the head unit, I just run a 4-channel amp with RCA inputs feeding right from my ipod. Probably the best stereo mod to date.

After ripping the antenna mount off the side (above the taillight) two or three times, I decided that location sucked. Next I tried a shorter one off the roof rack which died in a parking deck. Finally I put the big whip back on the front bumper, and that's worked the best so far.

I marked the roof height on the whip, and it makes a nice height gauge for driving under stuff.

Got a overhead console from the junk yard, scrapped the stock computer and installed a little radio shack unit...works great and out of the way! Just a little dremel action to get it to fit.

i have the Cobra 75 WX ST. I installed it in the area where the stock misc switches go. (I luckily did not have those swithces and was able to utilize those three slots. 2 for my KC lights and one for my CB.)

I used the Firestik mount and utilized the upper taillight bolt as one of the four mounting screws.

This is a great thread, and like the OP said I've also been looking for a specific setup that I know I've seen... I've spent about 3 weeks at this point looking for the pictures in a bunch of Jeep and XJ forums.

I'm looking for pictures of a setup like the one that VET8911 (NICE setup btw!) has, but for an overhead console found in the '97 and newer XJ's. The person who did it however, didn't remove the computer part, instead he removed the garage door opener and sunglasses areas and installed his CB Radio there. If ANYONE knows who did this, has pictures, or knows of the thread I'm talking about PLEASE PM me or post it up. I've run out of ideas on how to search for it.

Thanks!
