looks like XJ's qualify for $3,500.00 govt. voucher upon trade in. Tempting to strip all the upgrades off the XJ, trade it in for a econo box for the kid to drive.

The vehicles just need to be running, and I think owned for a year with current reg. We have to drain the oil and add 2qts of some crap like sodium silicate(liquid glass) and run the engine until she blows.

I think I am going to start a pool, $5.00 buy in, to see how long each engine takes to blow. We have 6 right now.

This program might hurt pick a parts buisness.

I think that is the point, The Gov doesn’t want our old "clunkers" on the road, if we cant get replacement parts we will have no choice but to surrender.

"Trade-in vehicles must be registered and insured continuously for the full year preceding the trade-in"

This is making me sick thinking about all the XJ's that will be no more. :(

Actually I just sold a guy stock suspension so he could do just this...little depressing thinking that I helped in the demise of an XJ

You can not go out and buy one for the purpose of trading it in. It has to be owned and registered for the past year, I assume by the person trading it in.

Other issues is the qualifying match up new vehicals....Only certain models match up with XJ's to qualify.

So you're going to get rid of a reliable older vehicle thats cheap to insure and get your kid a brand new car that you'll likely have a payment on?

Why?

No I am not, just tempted. The reason would be reliability. Sure the XJ would be cheaper, even when you factor in minor and/or major repairs, thanks to the resources here at NAXJA

However, not worring about breakdowns, being stranded or wondering what is next certainly does have value...in the right situation.

That being said...it was just a thought for those who are getting fed up with keeping older cars running.

Sure but I don't worry about breakdowns and I drive mine to and from the trail unlike a lot of the guys who I started wheeling with here years ago, hell breakdowns can even happen to a new car. My Jeep gets me there and back though there have been times I have had problems (drove it back from Vegas with a bad crank sensor and drove it back from Moab with a t-case that would go into neutral if you let off the gas). Not that I'm your average user either. :D

Well a brand new '96 camaro failed in the middle of the freeway twice due to a faulty fuel pump on me. My father's 1 year old Jaguar tossed a rearend. My mother's minivan seized an engine after leaving a dealer for a standard tune up 2 years after purchase.

Where does a new car ensure you won't break down or be stranded???

Sure, they were covered under warranty, but I was still stranded.

EDIT: Not to mention, there are only 21 vehicles that qualify for purchase under this new plan, none of which I would like to own, much less make payments on or pay an increased insurance rate for.

I have heard that some of them "obama cars" (the little Green Planet People cars) have a lot of issues in reliability, and the battery powered ones even more so. I would also look at the crash ratings in those little cars i think the XJ would come out better, especially if you put some aftermarket bumpers on them.

I look at it like this, most people who can afford to buy a new car right now can take advantage of this if they want too. I think there are more and more americans that at one time could buy a new car but now cant and thus the cash for clunker program wont work as well as they will hope without amendments or something to it.

I also of course do see your point though, just would rather see the XJ not die like that.. although I wonder if the Government will in fact melt these vehicles down or turn them in to a pick n pull.. is there anything in the program that states what is actually done with them?

I for one will drive my XJ and trucks until they end up impounding them due to not allowing me to drive them cause they are banned .. or wrecked. :).
