My 5yo son was outgrowing the car seat he used in my 89 XJ so we needed to find a replacement. There were a few problems with this. 1) There are only lap belts in the back seat, so a booster was out of the question. That's ok though, as I wanted to keep him in a 5pt harness anyway. 2) Seats that use the 5pt harness for kids over 40 lbs are few and far between. 3) The three that I could find all required a teather anchor, which weren't required till 2002 (I think).
Beleive it or not...(this is the tech part), there IS an anchor available! I don't know if it goes back to 84 or not, but I don't see why it would be any different. I contacted my local dealer and even the parts guy was shocked that an anchor was available. It came as a kit with a bold, nut, seal washer, flat washer, spacer and anchor bracket. Installation requires drilling a hole through the floor. There is a pilot hole in the
outer flange of the rear spring shackle hanger. Piece of cake.
The seat we ended up getting was the Safeguard Go...

and so far, so good. It was easy to install, the kid likes it and it is super compact so it doesn't seem to take up the entire back seat.
