I have a 89 xj with a tired 4L really want to do the hesco stroker kit w/ the injectors and over sized t-body the veh. is a DD and needs to still pass smog in the nazi like emessions rules of CA anyone now if this is poss. please let me know. thanx

As I recall, there are several here and at the "strokers" board (groups.yahoo.com/group/strokers) who have built stroked engines, and had them pass California Smog without any trouble. Since the engine is externally the same, as long as it runs clean (they don't measure air volume anyhow,) it will pass visual and the sniffer.

I know what you mean about the rules, tho - I went to a smog workshop years ago (just before statewide Smog Check II) and asked a bunch of embarrassing questions. Everytime they (the Acting director and Regional Director for the Bay Area) said it was "federal law" that they did that, I pulled out my copy of the federal laws and FMVSS and defied them to show me where - or just cite the source. Naturally, they couldn't do it.

I'd not have any trouble with SC/SCII, properly implemented. Since they're concerned with results, make it a results-based test. Eliminate the visual inspection, and let us modify things - you'll see a drop in aggregate emissions as a result.

Make exhaust sniffers (four-gas or five-gas) a little more affordable, and we can use them as tuning tools - they're better than pyrometers and vacuum gages! I've been trying to get my hands on a reasonably accurate exhaust sniffer for several years...

yeah its funny how they said federal law......the question I'd have to ask is why it doesent apply to all states as most federal laws do ......why are they pickin on california?.....its not the feds its the california air resorces board.......a bunch of "bored" people that cant think of something better to do...(probably pissed because thier golf game sucks)..I could be wrong but it seems that way to me ( I used to live there)........

My 4.7L passed the Colorado tail pipe emissions after I added a MAP adjuster. My injectors were a touch too large so it ran a bit rich. Other than that, it ran nice and clean and well below all the limits. The engine was converted from a 4 banger to the stroker. The state certified the swap, no problem.

That sounds about right - with a little tweaking, the stroker would probably run cleaner than the engine it replaces.

As far as "state-certifying" the swap, that's generally doable, IF the engine was avaialbe IN THAT VEHICLE and IN THAT YEAR, and the replacement engine and control electronics are AS NEW AS or NEWER THAN the chassis (at least, that's how they want to do things here.) Doesn't matter how clean it runs elsewise - I'd have to jump through hoops to get a V8 swap to pass smog, or park the rig on a trailer.

Dumb - I've been tossing around the idea of a 426 Hemi swap (it hasn't been done yet, has it?) into an XJ chassis...

Like I said before, make the programme entirely "results-based," any swap has to run as clean as or cleaner than OE, and cut out the visual - then smog might make some sense...

Oh - and they can stop sending me to "Test Only" stations now - for two main reasons:
1) As far as I'm concerned, EVERY station is "Test Only" - I don't allow anyone else to work on my vehicles (and I won't pay for it if they do, since I didn't authorise the repairs. I also don't allow them to "Operate my vehicle on public roadways" - if you can't do the job sitting there, you can't do it...)
2) I'm tired of the damn test costing twice as much as my tags - and I still can't figure out why I've got to pay for tags every year to begin with (really, what am I getting? Pay for registration when you acquire a vehicle, and again when anything changes - paying to maintain a record that doesn't change is foolish...)

You guys think it's bad in Cali?? Here on Okinawa, we have to remove any after market exhuast parts or anything else they can see/hear every 2 years for JCI inspection, and they have random road blocks to check for compliance. You have to send you vehicle off for a week or so to have it done and it costs like $600!! People give little econobox's away here because they get orders, and don't want to go through the hastle to JCI it before they leave, so the car is free. And worst of all, your only allowed one car! Weird thing is, you are allowed to drive two-stroke bikes and four wheelers around on streets/expressways, and you can SEE the polution coming out of them.
