just seeing if anyone gets worst gas mileage than me.
im now up to around 130 miles a tank
there is reason for it, 33's and stock gearing
enough said on why its so bad
oh yeah, and my engine is older than sh*t
runs good but very old
so if your only getting 180 miles a tank dont feel bad
becasue there is people doing much worse like me
filling up every 4 days.
this hobby isnt cheap!

i have gears sitting at home, cant afford to have them put in though. maybe one day i will see 200 miles a tank
ONE DAY.........

how about 168 miles to a 50 gallon tank thats about 3.4 mpg:scared: oh if it matters its a 1975 6ton grain truck heften about 36,000 gross 7 miles :jester:

Ride the bus for month and you'll have saved enough in fuel to pay for the gear install ;)

You've really nailed the source of the poor mileage, and associated power loss as well. For comparison, I have 4:56's, 285's (33" tall 11.5" wide) and an AW4 trans and I get 340 miles out of a tank when I go to Moab which is a highway drive combo of steep mtn climbs and rolling hills. I consider this pretty good on stock 89 motor with 191,000+ miles. I average about 14 around town and 16-18 on the freeway, usually cruising at 75+ mph.

BTW, when my tank is empty, I can put 21 gallons in it, thanks to the vent tube mod from the Go-Jeep website, so you can add to your range by adding another 3-4 gallon capacity.........but it then costs $38 to fill the tank at $1.82/gal gas prices...........glad I have my Honda to commute with.

while im on the subject of crappy gas mileage.....
when the low fuel light starts to go on in the older xj's, mines an 89, how much time do you usually have left before your out?
i always fill up as soon as the light turns on but i didnt know if theres that more left.

Yeah, mine starts to come on and off when i have about 6 gallons left. It stays on steady when i have 4 gallons left. Its a 20 gallon tank on my '95 Country

that would be at a 1/4 tank, that cant be right. mine didnt have a gas light until i did a cluster swap, i would just drive till it would cut out around sharp corners.

Here's what I've found on mine, I have about 5 gallons left when the light comes on, didn't used to have that much but when I had the tank out to pound out a dent a few years back (note: install tank skid before denting tank, much less work) I think I bumped the sending unit/float arm out of stock calibration upon re-installation.
Best way to find out how much you have left when the light comes on is to carry a 5 gal can of fuel (with fuel in it :gee: ) and track your mileage til it starts to sputter (best done in town, close to a fuel station) then pull over and put in a gallon or so to get you to the nearest gas station. Fill the tank and note the difference in volume between filling it when empty VS filling it as soon as the light comes on. I'm guessing that 3-4 gallons is about average, but as they say.......your mileage may vary

Thats crazy, I used to deliver beer for a major beer distributor and my truck with a fully loaded 18 bay trailer (36000 lbs) got 9 mpg in city driving. I never drove it more than a few miles down the hwy so i never figured out the hwy mileage. My truck was an automatic too. It was a '99 though so technology has come a long way since then.

Vent mod sounds interesting! Any specific URL?

1993 Chevy G20 (3/4 ton) Cargo van with the 305 and auto. Gets roughly 400 (380-410) miles a week of mixed driving and gets filled up every other day usually. Roughly 18 gals. The driving is every thing from in city to out in the "hollers". Been a few where the hill was so steep I couldn't get over about 5-10 mph. Never tried to figure the mileage out....not sure I wanna know.

OTOH... I can thrash my bike...lots of high speed and draggin' and still get about 40-45 mpg.

Sarge

Our f-250 with the 5.4 (2003) with a Cat-back and Cold-air, gets about 7 MPg in the mountains pulling a trailer with touring motorcycle on it.

I jsut got back from hauling a heavy load 200 miles in my lil MJ and still got nearly 30 MPG (load weight 1200 lbs of floor tile and drywall) totally empty my MJ will take 16.5 gallons gotta love the ax4 and 4 cyl LOL

Haha. Well my light comes on after the needle is on the halfline. The light really comes on, on corners.

Im getting 9 mpg with stock everything except 31s and a 3 inch lift.

I have a 98 4.56 gears and 35XTerrains.. I just got back from driving out to Texas from Va. and I recieved 300 a tank cruising @ 85-90 mph the whole way... I feel that I could have gotten better if I didnt have to deal with the winds and the hills... On the way back I stopped in Mississippi to pick up a u-haul and carry it packed with stuff to Va. and got about 200-250 a tank and having to deal with the hurricaine wind blowing me everywere and the rain, mountains... I also blew my header wide open

here is a question... i always fill up at the light because im afraid of running out... i have a 2000 xj and i want to know how big my tank really is...

:dunce:

It's in the manual - look under fluid capacities.

Sit down with your manual in the $hitter - read it cover to cover. I'll bet you learn at least one thing you didn't know about your XJ.

I'll give this one to you for free - 20 gallons.

we have an old '54 (i think) F-700 grain truck with a flathead inline six that gets about 3-4 mpg loaded(well when it ran :shhh: ) that and on inclines it was the slowest thing i ever remember being in.
