I am looking at doing a cage on my xj I am stuck between a intrenal cage or exo cage . I would like to see some examples of all 3 as well
I want to know the pros and cons of all 3 . you input will be appericated .

Well IMO and Exo cage is worthless unless it's tied into a good internal cage...

Obviously, Exo cages are easier to construct/weld... but they weigh alot more and require a lot more tube...

The next cage I do will be internal w/ an external halo...

A little food for thought for you guys I will be keeping a full interior . but I want some protection and keep the inside dry .

I have an interior cage in my rig, a few reasons why I like it is.. it is tied in in 8 spots. MY harness bar is in the right spot, my seats are integral to the cage. If you go to my webshots page you can see pics of that... and my MJ truggy which has a front Exo.

Just look under rebuild of POng, and new toy listing

Wut he said!

does anybody have a example of a interior/exterior halo so I can see how it is designed .

There's some pics floating around on here... or Pirate.. Basically it's an internal cage w/ the "halo" being over the roof and rain gutters and attached to the internal cage... Think EXO cage that's only over the roof/rain gutters...

On an XJ i think it's the way to go b/c you get rub rails over your rain gutters and also storage on the roof, if it's upside down the roof stays pretty intact, etc...

If you're wheeling places where you're apt to roll your XJ I dont think a little body damage is going to concern you... I just dont see the point of external cages to protect the body of a trail rig?

exo not necessary but an intrnal cage tied to an external structure provides what i think is a stronger structure to brace the unibody, better roof protection in the event of a rollover (rig isnt trashed after its been on its lid), and great interior room over an internal cage...

will I be able to seal the interior from the weather ? or will I suffer from interior leaks ?

uhm... you could use bolts and plates. thats ALOT easier to seal than a 1.75" DOM tube going through the roof...

just a thought, not sure if it was assumed or not.

No a lot of the through the roof tudes get welded around and tied into the unibody.

Wouldn't the flexing of the unibody tend to "tear" the metal if you welded the tubes to it? I wouldn't mind tying something like a halo bar to mine but not sure I would want to weld it to the roof. Just curious.

thats kinda what i was thinking.

how did thehardstruggler do his?? as i remember from the last time i saw it he has a exo/interior cage right?

IIRC his went up through the front fenders but wasn't welded to them and ran up the "A" pillar then down the roof line and tied to the rear bumper and along the way it was welded to the drip rail/roof. It didn't actually go through the roof though. rredalty, chime in here. I don't really remember.

This is a good one I think.

Here you can see the roof connections to the halo.

i believe tims does through the roof... theres an interior piece at the b pillar like a conventional cage... tims is one of my favorites, simply because it goes all the way to the front bumper but its hidden, providing clean bracing for the front framehorns which are mostly neglected when bracing the body

heres a good picture of tims rig, theres a b pillar internal component that ties to the bar oing straight across at the b piller on the roof... if you look closely you can see the fender bar going straight from the bumper into the corner of the header panel, it ties back into the a pillar piece that comes down... there are a few different ways to do this cage that are equally as clean and effective.

Thanks Doug. I couldn't remember. Doesn't it also tie into his rocker replacements as well? And yes, his looks really good. I like how tight it is to the body. That was a job well done for sure.
