thinkin about picking up an "assault" rifle before the upcoming presidential election, either an ar clone(bushmaster most likely) or an AK clone(romanian). from what i can gather the AR cost more to buy up front, but is cheaper and easier to get ammo for(.223) but the ak cost MUCH less up front but ammo isnt as widespread(7.62x39) and there is less ammo choices with it and it is slightly more expensive.

What is everyones recommendation?

Thanks for the input

bushmaster! my old roommate had one it was nice it'll shoot way better than an AK-47 would ever think of shooting

That is quite simply untrue.

While you might find 5.56 around more than 7.62x39 (I don't know, I never look for 5.56) you will not find it cheaper. You can find pricey x39 if you look for fancy stuff but with an AK and no worries about bi-metal jackets you can easily find stuff like Golden Tiger (lead core, bi-meteal jacket, steel case) for 20 - 22 cents per round.

What do want it for?

The Bushmaster is more of a rifle, where the AK47 is more of an assault.

Plain and simple. The AK47 will kill more people quickly than a AR15 will. The 223 is meant to wound the 7.62x39 is meant to kill.

The AR15 will be more accurate over longer distances.

If you want a accurate rifle with excellent stopping power, get the Remington 700. Bull barrel .308. That gun with a nice scope will cost as much as the Bushmaster, plus you can deer hunt with it.

I have the AK47

and the Remington 700 will be my next gun.

Always take the caliber that's most available to 'borrow' in a hurry. :)

This is a good point. No matter how good/nice the gun it's just a expensive club without ammo.

Well if you want the most common rifle round in existence, one you can find in just about any store that stocks ammunition on the fact of the earth, get a .30/30!

30/30 is my favorite gun BY FAR!!!

I shot an ak47 and it was a lot of fun too, very simple to use.

There is a reason why so many different military's use that weapon.

But you gotta think of what others are going to use, cause when the crap hits the fan you want a common munition...

Do you have the tools to pack your own ammo?

the 30/30 is a superb weapon, and as far as defence, the bark of one is enough to keep heads down while you move. (nice 30/30). As for assault type, the Romanian ak is pretty nice. However, it lacks in accuracy. The ability to spit multiple rounds down range is great when working as a team, but, (here's mu butt). As a stand alone, one man weapon I call ar to the front. It will not put lead as far down range, it will deliver lead to where you want it. The ak is less (IMO) accurate, look at test results. As for the "less reliable" argument, yes an ak is a tractor, however, if keeping a weapon ready and clean is that much of an issue, throw rocks. I say, shoot both if you can, then go ar, when the poopie hits the fan the 5.56 rounds will be what is most available. I'm sure someone will say I'm wrong, :shhh:

Had one. Sucked as far as accuracy goes.

I like the "both" idea. I went to the gun show to buy the bushmaster, but at $1000 compared to the $305 for the AK, well you see what I bought.

I started with close in weapons, and I'm working my way out.

Knife, pistol, shotgun, assault, rifle.

completely different usage though, I didnt care too much for shotguns.

I shot a pistol grip shotgun once, I think it was a 12ga, it didnt impress me. much better for real close I agree.

Shotgun is the most versatile piece in the arsenal. ;) It's an effective medium-ranged weapon.

as far as accuracy and knock down, I've put deer down with my 30/30 out near 70 yards or so, not so much as a jump. We must also take into account our varying terrain and goals. The 30/30 is a great gun for the cedar breaks and such as we have here. The shotgun My fav. is the mossberg 590a, with bayonet and buttstock, that's more an urban type, or heavy brush 50 yrds or less. The 30/30 is cool up to and a bit over 50 yrds. the ar and ak are nice to 250 or so, then lets pull out the 270 or the 300 win mag with the bull barrels and scopes. The main thing is practice, and more practice. Know the limits of your weapons and yourself. I've seen slug guns put rounds way down range, and I've seen pistols drive tacks at some distance, the key to that is...Practice. Once again this is my opinion, it's worth some air.
