built xj vs. pinzgauer?

I'm thinking of upgrading by getting a built lifted xj with 35" tires and detroit lockers.

How would this or my current xj 31" 5' lifted no lockers, compare in offroad performance and capablity with a 74 pinzgauer problably model 710k

I've just recently heard about the pinzgauer and someone said its the most competent off road vehicle in the world .

Anyone able to comment on comparative perfomance and capability.

the vovlo c-303 is better than the pinz, the pinz has a air cooled motor and other odditys.

Post this question in the SoCal Forum. IIRC about a year ago a Pinz owner mouthed off to a few SoCalXJ members, only to have his arse handed to him at Bronco Peak(Corral Canyon OHV). I haven't heard of him showing at any XJ functions since... :D :D

I've seen them in action around Big Bear, CA when I have been out there visiting my daughter. They did okay but you got to remember that the Pinz has a small air cooled engine. Really no match for the well built XJ. There is a guy that specializes in them and will also take you on a chartered ride in the San Berdoos. Of course the fire there may have burned him out. Dog slow on the road.

Try going to an autozone for 40 y/o 24 volt electrical parts.

I know a guy with a pinzy with mtrs and a winch...he takes it on local trail stuff but thats about it. Its really fun to watch, but also kinda scary (very tipsy, lifts tires like crazy).

It is highly capable (most competent is debatable, and that would be based on factory spec vehicles alone), locked front and rear from the factory, high clearance axles, etc. However, I think it is safe to say that an appropriately equipped xj on 35s, locked, would walk all over the pinzy (there could be a thing or two that the pinzy could do better).

One definite downside is top speed on the road is something like 55 (i think thats what he said) but for an around the town trail toy, that wouldnt really matter. Other than the ultra cool factor of driving a pinzy, for general use, maintenance, etc., I would go with the XJ.

What's a Pinzgauer? Does anyone have any pictures?

They also come in a 6X6 flavor.

Buddy of mine has a Pinz, here's my observations. It is nice that it comes with selectable lockers and the portal axles and has seating for a bunch of friends to ride with you. It is also a great vehicle for an unabashed attention whore. It will not go faster than 55 mph or so. It will deafen you on the way to the trail. The "heater" is pathetic. You need parts? You pay however much the few suppliers tell you to pay. You can't work on it yourself? (I know I've never r/r'd a portal axle) Hope there's a Pinz familiar mechanic in your area and that he doesn't try to rape you too bad.

It's a fun, different vehicle that is very capable in stock form, but parts/service will be problematic, and an XJ that is properly setup to run 35s with lockers will be a much more capable/reliable vehicle (assuming some level of driver skill). Like I said, fun trucks, but not really the end-all be-all of wheeling, specially for the $10000+ I hear they go for.

Just thought I would drop a reply to this post. I was crusing around the NAXJA site today, first time in about a year, and couldn't belive that a Pinz was mentioned.
I used to have a pretty built up XJ. Great vehicle, 5inch lift, 33x12.50, 8.8/ARB rear, 4:56 and all the trimmings. I never had any problemwith this vehicle and was able to acomplish more than most with it. My problem is that I just have an issue of being different and as you all know the XJ and all jeeps are a dime a dozen, so I decided to Buy a pinz, just a little different.
Well, different I got. I had to learn how to drive all over again, I have to take different lines than everyone else and have to get used to wheels up in the air which is no big deal because of the suspension system and lockers. But I love it, I can do way more things that my XJ, mainly because of the clearance (15in+). I just got back from Moab last week for a final test and she passed with flying colors. My average speed was 63MPH, 14 GPM, I was able to wheel with it and sleep in the back of it(it can hold a queen size mattress in the back). And this is a 1 ton truck that can pull 10,000lbs. In my opinion, pound for pound, it is the most complete offroad vehicle. I am not saying that it is a rock buggie but I was able to do Poison Spider Mesa, Golden Rim and CLiffhanger in the dark. It was awesome. In a way it is apples and oranges but after wheeling both quite extensivilly the Pinz over all would prevail. I have custamized some bumpers and such, if you would like to check it out go to www.photobucket.com and it is Album "Pinz189".

PS I just had to replace the Fuel Pump the other day.....NAPA $40.

OK you curious minds, try this...

I think they are pretty cool - both looks and function. BUT - I will never buy one. After seeing stp189's up at Providence Canyon I fell in love with them. They would certainly be a sweet rig to own. For the wheeling I do, an XJ just makes a ton more sense. I bought my last one for $800 with a 4.0L and an auto. A few hundred bucks for some lift parts and $250 for 2 lockers (1 used, 1 new) I have a rig that can do anything I want it to. Bear in mind that I have a wife and kid. One of my main concerns is their comfort and enjoyment. I don't think that traveling a few hundred miles to the trail in a military-style off roader would be ideal at all. The XJ is pretty comfy and can go as fast as I like. XJ's like it can do almost ANY trail at Moab without too much trouble. That's good enough for me.

I'm sure that the mighty Pinzgauer is a sweet ride for a Pinz enthusiast. They just aren't for me. For less money I can have a rig which is far better suited for my needs. Just my 2 cents...

BTW - we miss you STP! Come visit more often. I haven't seen you wheel with XJ's since Bountiful over a year ago.

theres nothin wrong with air cooled engines in the application they were meant for. if its a combat vehicle, i wouldnt want my radiator shot out so my engine melts down. air cooled probably last longer than radiator equipped engines, and come to op temp quicker, and are less hastle in the winter time. yeah we run 4 Deutz air cooled tractors.....crazy germans! lol, j/p!

Bring it out to JV & we'll see how well it wheels. You only have 14" of clearance? I'll admit that my breakover is only 23" because of my LCA mounts and I've only got 11" under the 14 bolt (1 ton BTW) that's because of the 38" TSLs.

Dime a dozen? Yeah right.

and the di*khead of the day award goes to.....

Vintagespeed for feeling like his pee-pee was too small by the Pinz owner.

vintagespeed....Lack of education is ignorance. Who in this conversation has delt with both machines?? And I am not talking just surfing the web pages. People like you I don't miss in the Jeep world. You really don't get to much ingnorance in the Pinz world.
My XJ was great, it was hard to sell but the Pinz is a mechanical marvel. It is so simple to work on and for the time (1974) and today it is mechanically and technically amazing.
Oh, by the way vintagespeed, with my BFG Mud 255 75's my clearance in the lowest spot is 15 3/4" with 300 pounds of weight in the back, but having a tublar chassey helps too. No broken drivelines here.

So that is where you disappeared to! Missed seeing you and your family out on the trails. Keep in touch.

p.s. it is hard to be different in an XJ, especially around these parts. Everybody and their dog's got one.
