Bikes...

You wanna haul my ass to and from work every day and then out to wherever I'm going on the weekends until I ship? Gotta replace the truck with something.
Part of the reason I want a bike is so I'll have a decent amount leftover to put away.
What I don't get is that your not driving the truck you have now cause its not registered? How the hell are you getting to and from work now then? Yeah I remember you telling me your not driving it cause its not plated.

And like scott (in another thread) said you think your gonna have all this money when you come back. How long are you gonna be gone for? 4 years or longer? While your gone your gonna get paychecks and your probably gonna be spending them while your gone. So wait till you get where you are to buy a vehicle/bike.
just my .02

They're good on gas, cheap to insure,

cheap to insure? if you are considering skimping on motorcycle insurance than you really are the idiot we all make you out to be in fun.

how old are you? 21? on a sport bike? cheap insurance? ha. righttt. and even if you only get liability on the bike its slf, if you DO NOT get a shit ton of medical coverage on your policy than you are setting yourself up for failure.

get a bike. doo ittt. cause they're effing incredible. but PLEASE be smart about it. for yourself and your family.

just sayin.

Ever hear of a temp tag?

This contract is 4 years but I'm planning on making it a career. I know I won't exactly be making so much money I won't know what to do with it, but there isn't much I'll be able to spend money on when I'm in training, and there isn't much I'll be able to spend money on in Afghanistan, so for the most part all of my money will go to savings.

Don't worry Mike, I'm not gonna skimp out on any of it.

I have a 22yo friend on an R1, only pays like $150 a year.

I want to be as smart about it as I can... I don't want to kill myself before I even ship out. That's why I posted up here asking people with experience.

You do know when you are in recuit training and whatever other training you go to you won;t be able to have a car or bike

Hence selling the truck cause it'll be a bitch to store, and wanting a bike cause it'll be a lot easier to store.

Alright well, it ain't over till its over, but assuming all goes as planned I'll be trading my truck for a nice chunk of cash tomorrow. Which means I'd like to get the bike Thursday or Friday.

Here are a few I found on the local craigslist... what are your guys' opinions on these?

This one's got quite a few bells and whistles that I'd probably end up taking off and selling, but its got some nice things too like the reshaped seat, new tire, and its a good price...

Here's a Midnight for cheap

Like this one a lot

Lol that 05 is my least favorite of the CBRs.

Alright, I'm narrowing my list down and using this thread as a place to sort it all lol.
Here's the current selection...

This one's my top pic of the Warriors:

I like it cause its bone stock, its a clean slate for me to start with. And its a Midnight edition so it has the wheels I want. I could probably talk this guy down to $6-6500.

I like this one cause...
-cleaned up all the wiring
-grips, crossbar ends, throttle assist
-remounted brake res.
-intake
-power commander
-apparently a more comfortable seat
And I could sell all of the other stuff I don't want like the pipes and the underglow crap. I also might be able to find somebody that wants to trade the painted parts + cash on my end instead of just painting over the custom work. But this is a backup if that Midnight is gone, I'd rather start with a stock bike.

And this is the backup, cause its only got 30 miles on it.

Remember this... Everyone on the road is trying to kill you or race you when you are on a bike. Wear full gear and not just a jacket, they tend to roll up your back as you slide if they are not zipped to pants. Don't relax for a second and take your eyes off the road. Cause when you do that will be the time some guy pulls out on you and kills you. With that said bikes are sooooooooo much fun.

personally, I love riding. I did it in socal for 5 years without incident. Basically you have to anticipate that people will either not see you, or assume that they will do something stupid. Above all, if you remember that this is something that can kill you the moment you lose respect for the power, you'll be ok. (probably)

In my usual ask-what-people-think-and-go-do-the-opposite style, I got a Warrior. The ones I liked in the ads I posted earlier were gone, but I found another one that IMO is better than the ones in the other links. Went with a Warrior cause it was the same price as the CBR I was looking at, but 2 hours closer.

Here she is...
2006 Midnight edition, just barely over 3k miles :D

I'm definitely happy with it. With that R1 fork up front it handles a lot better than the other cruisers I've ridden, and DAMN does that 1700 v-twin have some umph behind it :D

Nice Mason!

Since everyone else told you the oppposite, you can leave it at my house when you ship. I'll take it for walks, keep the oil circulated, etc... :D

I do need a place to put it when I go...
I'll let ya hang onto it while I'm gone, but if ya crash it you need to replace anything broken with aftermarket upgraded parts :D

thats a nice bike but you should have gotten another jeep :moon:

For what that bike and the gear I got cost, I coulda bought and built a rig lol.
But then I'd still run into the "where the hell do I store this thing" issue, and besides... the rig I wanna build would be a trail-only rig, which means I gotta get a new tow rig first.

good choice! she's a beauty!
