bike trails in OC or nearby

Why not just take him out and let him survive the 11 miles that the san juan trail has to offer at Ortega.... Id even go for that one... since its been a year that I actually rode my mountain bike....

Only 11? Sounds like a guy who shuttles! Supposed to be twice that :laugh3:

You might also want to go north:

Above Altadena and Glendale offers good trails. The Arroyo Seco, Mt. Wilson truck trail, Mt. Lowe railway right of way, and other good trails (and you can also cheat, downhill only, if a friend drops you off at Mt. Wilson). Poison Oak can get thick in the shaded wet areas (a warning).

Sounds like Ed is really trying to kill you with these mountains unless you shuttle. This was my domain and I live only a couple of minutes from these. These trails are total ass kickers when you are not in shape. The single tracks are not for the beginners (even though Ed mentioned the fire roads).

A more realistic suggestion for a true begginer (I am actually putting PMS aside here), you can do westridge in the Santa Monica Mountains. Do that (or something similar like the lastara Peters Canyon in Tustin) a bunch of times until you feel really comfortable with your heartrate and level of fitness before trying much anything more difficult.

I was going to mention something about that, but since he is a nice guy and I was going to beg him to regear my front end at the next M&G, I figured I'd lay off.

Let's just call it a long 11. ;)

I thought it was 12.5 miles? You want Scott to do axle work but he cannot calibrate a cycling computer? :laugh3:

Hey, lay off... it is a long 11. ;)

Now, if the beer in the garage wasn't 16 miles away I sure would be happy.

Long 11......ugh yeah, thats what it is. :kissyou:

Sounds like we have enough to have an XJ mountain bike club. I elect Grant to organize a monthy ride. I think he has a little experience.:laugh3:

Remi, come on down to my place. I live right by the entrance to Aliso Wood Canyon Park. I'll take it real easy on you, unlike Avery and Grant. :laugh3:

I'd also be up for a San Juan trail run. I love that trail...when done as a shuttle.

Avery - Curt and I will both be taking our bikes to Moab. Planning on riding Sunday and Monday. Definitely Porcupine Rim.

Are you guys meeting up in Vegas Saturday on the way up? Where at?

Hey Cracker... Real mountain bikes don't have computers, just guys in full body armor.....:)

I haven't ridden up that hill in a real long time, not about to start.... At least not with a 28lb free ride bike...

Come on Scott. I've climbed that on my 34 lb. freeride bike. :laugh3:

Actually, climbing from the lower parking lot up to Cocktail Rock isn't too bad. Then turn around and bomb back down. But it is more fun to do a shuttle from Blue Jay. It's okay to be a shuttle monkey once in a while.

28lbs? What are you, a weight weenie/lycra dude? :)

I'm quite sure I don't want to see any of you guys in lycra. :wierd:

I know you're taking a lot of crap today but what 'free ride' bike weighs 28? Both of mine way 25 lbs (one single speed and my Blur). I heard a weight weeny / lycra comment out there (Curtis...lay off :laugh3: ). I did spent a couple of dollars picking 'quality' light weight parts for the Blur and it does have hydro discs on it but the singlespeed has a Shermin on it and is a tank.

Lycra was the main reason Remi wanted to start to ride. We don't want to scare him off now.

We'll actually (Remi doesn't know this yet) but I was actually thinking on hooking up with him out in Hurricane so I could ride Gooseberry Mesa before Moab on Saturday. Otherwise, Interbike ends on Friday in Vegas and I could hook up with y'all (the redneck in me) on Saturday as your coming through. I have to bee in Vegas the whole week before Moab

The funny thing is that if Remi had a bike out at Gooseberry, he would love it.

OK, I think that this thread just took on a life of it's own :D :D

Whatever, weight weenie. :)

Ah, the Goose. What a great freakin' place to ride. Amazing. One of my favorites, along with Little Creek Mesa.

If you guys end up looking to stop on the way back, I know of a killer hippie resort/hot springs in Monroe that is cheap. www.mystichotsprings.com

Back to Remi's love of lycra...

We were thinking about stopping in Mesquite Saturday night because the rooms used to be like $29. Just checked...gone up to $70. So we may end up staying in St. George. Then on to Moab on Sunday.

Would love to ride Goose or Little Creek, but we probably wouldn't get there until the evening. Maybe on the way back...

Grant, that mystic place looks kinda cool. Any idea what kind of riding there is?

Mike, the owner, says there are miles of trails in the hills but I've yet to ride them. Give a call and talk to him, he is a really cool guy and will give you the low down.

As a side note, Mike is a bit famous. He was the graphic artist for the Grateful Dead until their demise. There are some pretty cool hippie buses on the property and he blows glass that sells on Ebay to finance this crazy endevor.

Room prices, back when I was last there, were $10 a head for the "dorm" (a huge room with six queen size beds) and that included free soaks, or $30 for the cabins with soaks.

Clothing is required, so no worries about Remi airing his junk.
