winamp all the way.
Never had a problem.
Rip at a slow speed to prevent CD skipage.

Do I need to purchase winamp pro to make actual mp3s?

It looks like I can only make mp4s.

Will most portable mp3 player play mp4?

gimme a minute.....
MSG me over AIM or MSN if you can... I don't feel like playing PM tag.

AudioGrabber, free, works well.

I use I-Tunes, but if you don't have an I-Pod it's a PIA to transfer files. You have to do them one at a time. At least with the Reio Mp-3 player I had you did. Seems to work great for burning Mp-3 disks though.

I think itunes is pretty easy and a great way to organize your stuff.
Ya but when you rip stuff through Itunes, it turns all the files into a complete cluster f*ck. It names all the files like "F19-XDIJ" I know this because I was transfering some music over from my bro's comp to mine, and I had to go through his whole file and pick out each song one by one.

Music Match Jukebox is great I think. I always use it to rip my CDs. It organizes them all into neat folders in your "My Music" folder. I've been using it for years. You can download it for free I believe on their website.

X2, before I knew it, I destroyed my entire music collection after installing iTunes. Took me several hours to rename and reorganize my music. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless they plan to only use iTunes from that moment on. Once your music has been reformatted by iTunes its not playable with any other music players...

On another note, its not free, but I love JetAudio...
