Been workin on the Heep!!

ColoradoRaptor

Headbanging Hillbilly
Put it on jackstands Monday. First thing I did was drop the transfercase(242) and replace it with a used one that had a H&T already installed(Monday). Then I followed up with some TnT Stiffnerz, had fun with the welder.....what a bitch stitching the top(Tuesday/Wednesday)!!! After the Stiffners I installed the BDS belly(Longarm), damn what a nice piece(Thursday)!! Pulled the MJ bastards and installed the 6.5 Rusty's, needed four hands for that but I made due with minez(Friday/Saturday)!! Found out the exaust was in the way of the passenger UCA, had to cut and weld that out of the way. After fightin with all this stuff was on my way to work last night when my damn clutch cable in the Mustang snapped!! WTF I says, now I have to get the Heep off jackstands and on the road half done!!!:smsoap: Ok, so I attach the rear DS check all bolts/nuts etc, pull out of the shop......hhhhmmmmm, I hear something rubbing!?!?!? I get out and crawl under to take a look....nothing that I can see. Get out on the road and I can still hear some rotational rubbing(thinking DS), only does it on acceleration....stop get out and look again...cannot see anything?!?!? Now I decide to test the TC that I swapped in.......all is good in part time....shift into full time and take off again....POP....there goes full time, all I hear is the TC whinning!!:scared: Now I am thinkin holy crap I just blew my TC. I shift back into part time and all is fine..????..What the hell just happened(Today)? So right now the Heep is half done with 7.5 in the rear and the same 4.5 up front(did not get the LA comletely installed).

Any ideas as to what the hell is rubbing, it sounds like the DS but nothing is even close to it and it only does it when accelerating? What the heck happened to the TC, if I put it in full time it just whines at me but works in every other position?

I knew someone was goin to ask for some damn pics!! Did not take any pics of my horror show.....lol I'm not much for takin pics when I am gettin it on with my girl....:D...... Ok, Ok, I will take some pics of the aftermath and future wrenching BUT be warned it aint perdy!!:gee:

Are you sure the replacement case is a 242? The 231 has no full-time provision. I'm not sure what would happen if you put the shifter if the full-time position with a 231.

Maybe the exhaust is shifting under aceleration, hitting something. I had a shiny spot on my diff from our exhaust hitting, it mad a gawdawful racket under load.

Check the sidewall clearance to the leaves also. We helped one guy with a new lift remove an offending spring clamp on the trail. There was a problem was that not obvious when the suspension was static.

This thread needs pictures!

here is a pic of the heep.

Yes, it is a 242!

Update. The damn DS that I got with the used 242 has worn out u-joints in the CVJ!!! Should have noticed that before install............. Time to have it rebuilt!

DOH! I hate it when I do things like that!

damn i like your rig wanna trade?:)

:twak: :D I like my Heep, she works well for me!!

Still confused as to what the heck happened with the TC! Mind you I only had the rear DS in and was on a dirt road when it happened. I first shifted into part time and all was well, then into full time started out fine then POP and the whining! I looked at it today and the front out put turns but the rear does not.......hhhhmmmm not sure here as I am no TC expert. Any advice from the pro's would be greatfull!!

That's the way the 242 is supposed to work. It has a differential that allows the front and rear output to turn at different speeds so it can be used full time. With no front driveshaft, it's the same as an open axle with one wheel in the air.

You beat me to it John.

Yeah, that 242 isn't gonna do you much good without the front DS connected.

That concept I understand, that is why I retained the 242 instead of putting in the 231 I have in it's place. That still does not explain, atleast in my pea sized brain:laugh: , why I was able to drive about 1/2 mile with the one shaft in before hearing a loud POP and no go at all from that point on. Maybe I am just loosing my marbles here along with my marriage...................... oh well.

I sure did for a little over 1/2 mile.................

Were you in 2wd when you started the 1/2 mile drive? Did you shift the t-case at all while driving that 1/2 mile?

http://ezinearticles.com/?Jeep-Select-Trac-NP-242-Transfer-Case-Information&id=281045

"The NP 242 transfer case Full time mode opens the center differential allowing the front and rear axles to rotate at different speeds while still being linked by the transfer case. The end with the least traction will get the most torque."

"One common operating problem with the 242 transfer case is that it will stick in 4wd even if the lever is moved to 2wd. Internally, moving the lever loads a spring which then applies force to move the selector fork. If the gears are loaded with torque, the spring will not have enough energy to move the sleeve off the gears. Once torque is removed from the gears, the spring will then move the fork and slide the sleeve of the gears.

Momentarily lifting your foot off the gas will often unload the gears enough to allow the spring pressure to move the fork. On some high mileage units, a wear groove will form on the sleeve or gear causing it to stick longer and may require a couple of changes from loaded to unloaded to get the sleeve to release form the gear."

Maybe the pop you heard was the center differential locking in or out? Lack of resistance coming from the front drive (since no drive shaft) was sending all the torque to the front drive output? :dunno:

The 242 I bought came out of a 99 XJ. The owner said it had a little over 150k. I went ahead because I needed a H&T to get rid of my DS vibes. The case came with a DS (with worn out CV joints). The case seemed to be in fairly good shape, I think it is still. When i tested the case I stopped each time before shifting it into another selection. So I was at a stop when i shifted from part time into full. I was able to take off and get up to speed, that is when I heard the pop and got whining case/high rev's. It really may be nothing to worry about. I will take my rear shaft and have it rebuilt, reinstall it and go from there.

Update...........:flamemad: ......rebuilt the shaft......problem did not go away.....NOW it would seem that something is wrong with the TC internally!!!!!!!!!! I just put it in.........and may have wasted my money!!!!! Anybody know how to swap rear output shafts on a 242, I have never pulled one apart! I could really use some help on this one as I know very little about the 242 internally! I need to get this problem solved before the 24th as our Club is heading up Holy Cross!! Thanks!!

I've never overhauled a 242, but I have a bad one that another member gave me when he bought a good one from me. If you end up needing internal parts, let me know - this box of parts might have what you need.

I'm gonna be busy Friday and Saturday, but if you get in a pinch and wanna bring it by, I could look at it Sunday or Monday.
