I was last there on Sep 02, 2006 and went through the gate around noon. The sheriff's were very pleasant, asking me questions and cracking jokes about my Samurai (go figure). The guy asked to look in my cooler, I had sandwiches on the top and a lot of diet cokes underneath, standing straight up so you could only see the tops. I think he was looking for some Silver Bullets, I ended up taking every one out and put them on my seat. After he saw they were all sodas I put them back and was on my way. My Sammie has a little lift and slightly larger tires but it's completely street legal, I didn't have any problems after my cooler search. I had fun there that day, in fact I've had fun everytime I've gone to Azusa Canyon and I may try to make this one. I'm not a "hater" of the place and I don't think the people here that are giving others warnings are either (well, most of them aren't). I read "but the rangers don't exactly go through your ice chests" in the first post and knew that to be untrue. I didn't want someone getting a VERY unpleasant surprise because of that. Others have additional knowledge of things to be careful of - if those things aren't a problem for you show up and have fun. If they do cause a problem for you, take the clue and have your fun elsewhere that day. It's OK - it's America and you get to choose.
