Axles for Rocks

BTT for 44 and 8.8 fans.

CRASH

Toyota! yay

CRASH, you said in the first post of this thread that you've seen lots of Toyotas break, were they rear axles? what broke?

the front axles kinda suck with stock birfs (but can be upgraded to D60 strength), gear sets break occasionally with the 5.29 and 5.71 ratios, but rear shaft failures are extremely rare.

BTT for newbs.

Brett, mostly shafts at the 37" tire size. Usually right at the splines. Usually on fully loaded rigs.

Light weight = less carnage!

Got any ideas on axle trusses that incorporate traction bars (anti-wrap bars) for a D44? Been researching it for a while, but thought I'd ask someone with an XJ perspective.

Nemo,

I built one for the 8.8 out of 1.75" x .120" tube, bent over the diff, and teh void filled with 12g plate. My traction bar mount is welded to the tube near the lower hole, and to the plate and the 1.75" near the upper hole.

I have pics. My computer is uncooperative on downloading them at the moment, though. Standby.

Did front axle tech ever come up in this thread? I tried searching through it, but I didn't find any mention of front 44's or 60's, etc.

so a ford 9" or better is what i should be using with my soon to be 38's once the D44's (so i am told they are) break? i swear they look really small tho and wouldnt be suprised if they were stock... havent really looked over everything yet since its still barried in a garage but once it gets home it will be torn apart and gone through and beefed up.

see unfortunatly i dont know the people that had it prior aparently paid to have some of this work done on it and... well lets say i will have soem work cut out before i can go hard.

oh and also assuming it has some cruddy stock axles where should i get my axles from? i dont mind busting out the welder and fabbing something up if needed i just would like to be able to go to the junk yard and get me some new axles (if thats possible for the caliber of axle i would need to safely run my 38's)

You need a Dana 60 in front and somthing with 1.5" diameter axleshafts in back.

D-60, 9", D-70, 10.25" Sterling, 14 bolt

AWESOME!! the 14 bolt will be easy to get ahold of around here. lots of busted up old Z71's and teh dana 60... not stock in anything was it?...

thank you for teh quick and easy response.

I am pretty sure the z71's had the little 14 bolt not sure on the specs but the big 14 bolt full floating (ff) has a 10.5 ring gear the little one 9.5 and is semi floating (sf) and 33 spline and C-clips. 37" tires seems to be the limit on the 14sf in trucks probably more for a xj. about the same width as a 14bolt ff. the 14ff though in some applications came in 63wms to wms (cab and chassis) the 14sf is close to 60 strenght though not as good of aftermarket support.

thank you crash for the information.
