Auto Tranmission ?

I have a 87 cherokee and am in need a new tranny, but I am going to by a used one. My questions is what year models used the same tranny as my jeep that has the 4.0 and is a 4x4.

I believe 87-90 used the same, but did they change the output shaft for the transfer case in 91 and up.
