auto dim mirror

I should probably add that I live in California and the Jeep occasionally gets baked by the desert sun.

What model number Eric? I read where some have used the overhead temp sensor with the mirror and had positive results, bet it's all the same.

I found reference to an OEM mirror that had simulanous display of temp and compass, so i was checking ebay again. Found this Donnelly listing..

Does that look like it also has the backup camera?

Mine is the 177. I'm pretty sure it will work, but the junkyard is only an hour away and I need to go back for some other stuff anyway

Wow nice. I was looking at Donelly mirrors a few years back when they were selling directly to the public and they were at the top of the short list. The 2nd and 3rd pics there show what looks like a backup camera but the text doesn't say anything about it and the big zoomed pics look like it's just plastic tape of some kind probably a sticker. I really like the unobtrusive compass and temp tho very nice.

I picked up one of these at the junkyard today. I forgot to get a temp sensor so I will try using the one that came on the XJ.

If that doesn't work look post #3 I posted the part numbers for both the temp unit and the pigtail for it. I am still running the same mirror as I installed for this thread (#177) and still no issues using those numbers...

I got the mirror wiring integrated with the legacy overhead wiring. During the initial verification test, the power shorted to ground and blew the Dash/Gauge fuse (7.5 amp); since I have LEDs everywhere I replaced with 5 amp and all seems okay for the moment. Then I started experimenting with the features and functions and boogered the compass. Then the mirror mount fell off the glass. :sure:

Went to Advance got new mirror glue (that stuff is wicked), and got the mirror remounted. Then I reset the compass magnetic zone and drove around in circles in the parking lot until it relearned. Compass seems to work pretty well, although I do wish it gave degree readings instead of just the general direction.

The temperature shows a reading from the factory probe, but it's wrong. At cold start the temperature is about 3-4 higher than actual according to a couple of bank signs nearby. Furthermore the probe temperature is constantly rising, especially when I idle at a light. I think I have two problems here, first that the probe resistance is different and may also be sloped differently (ie not the same linear progression), and second that the tranny cooler line that runs through the crossmember near the probe is making the air by the probe hotter which is being exaggerated by the difference and reported as such. In order to fix both of those problems I will have to change probes and also try to reposition it behind the bumper a little bit. I will probably get a probe from the same Tahoe at the junkyard along with a few inches of wire.

Looks nice.

Radar above the mirror?

When my button came off years ago i took the opportunity to raise the mount up higher for better vision.

Looks good Erik.

Yeah it's radar. Cannot raise the mirror much since radar is there also plan to put CB in the dummy plate of the overhead console where the computer used to be located. It will be like airplane cockpit after that and the 12 new switches

I got to wondering how far off my temperature was so I drove my Cadillac and my dad's F150 to the banks, and they were both a little bit higher than the signs too but not as much as the Jeep. With that piece of data I decided that the mirror temp was possibly displaying the probe data correctly and therefore the probe was just getting too hot or providing bad data.

I headed off to the junkyard and gathered up a handful of ZJ probes, and also found a 6" extension harness on one of the ZJs (it might be on all of them dunno). This pic shows the stock XJ probe (top), two of the ZJ probes with their molded brackets, and the mini extension harness

I pulled the stock XJ probe from the crossmember bracket, attached the ZJ extension harness, and then used a push-pin to attach ZJ probe in the center air dam mounting hole, with the tip pointing straight down. This puts the probe into the outside air stream away from the tranny hose, and out of the black bumper cavity.

Temperature readings are exactly the same as the bank signs now, UNLESS I am idling at a light, and then temperature will creep up a couple of degrees. The temperature goes back to accurate within a minute of moving again however.

One thing on my to-do list is integrating the reverse lamp signal. I haven't done this just yet, but I did find an interior wire this morning. Remember that the tail light housings are wired from inside the cabin behind the cargo panels. Those wires go up to the firewall under the left trim panels that run along the floorboard, and then terminate at a large black connector behind the drivers kick panel. On my 91 the reverse wire is brown with a light green tracer. You can see it in this picture next to the solid green wire in the black connector that is in the lower left of the pic.

That wire continues on to the transmission where the reverse signal originates. The black connector looks like the easiest place to intercept it. Just have to pull the kick panel and A-pillar trim, then run some wire up to the mirror.

Please check your own wire colors, they changed often.

After verifying that wire with a test light, I ran it to the mirror in the bundle that goes across the front floorboard and up the passenger A-pillar. It seems to work properly... with my finger over the forward sensor (so the mirror thinks it's nightime) and the polarization at maximum, drop the transmission into Reverse and the polarization returns to normal somewhat quickly, then shift back into Park and the mirror goes dark again. No it's not at all worth the hassle, but it's off my to-do list now

Mine is popping fuses, i think i may have hit a wire with the a-pillar or visor screws. Been busy with other things lately, tired of winter already.

Those GM factory mirrors will display ICE when temp readings get near freezing temp. And will jump between ICE and the correct temp. Just something you'll have to live with.
