Ive been working out on and off (mostly on) for about 16yrs. I never competed though.
I went through the bulking up phases and all the fads and new supplements and such. Some work some dont....I learned to check my sources before plopping down my hard earned cash, especially after grad school.
Along with what the others may have added Ill say this much. Work out with intensity, if your having a conversation while your lifting weights..you're never gonna get anywhere. I see people go to the gym for years and never progress...no intensity; their jaws get more exercise than their biceps. Rest, your body grows when youre resting (days off and sleep). Get your form down perfectly, I see too many people lifting weight that they cannot handle and as a result their form is horrible; aside from poor developement you risk injuring yourself severly.
Pick up a book by Mike Mentzer and or Dorian Yates, these highly successful body builders follow a High Intensity workout system, whereby you do less and gain more, by maximizing their time at the gym and by really emphasising rest.
Of the supplements out there that I take and believe work, they have clinical research behind them and have proven to work by independent laboratories. You can even go read up on them in published science papers. But as with anything YRMV.
*mega dosages of Vitamin C, I take 6k milligrams a day
*CLA
*HMB
*Flax seed oil
*If you dont drink much milk, calcium, magnesium, zinc supplement combo
*Multivitamin (I take two doses a day)
*N02, the new kid on the block, the things I have read on this supplement have been positive and I can say I think it really works...even in your wanker!
*Creatine monohydrate
Then there are the steroid precursors, which are natural and legal, and only differ from real steroids by a missing compound or two. The thing is, once they are in your body they become real steroids your body supplies the missing compounds (science is great). These work, some better and more safely than others, however you risk the side effects that full blown steroids give you: acne, testicular atrophy, gynomastia, mood swings, water retention, elevated blood pressure, male pattern baldness and possibly complications late in life like, prostate englargement, and cardiovascular diseases.
There is too much more to say about this topic, my suggestion is to get a subscription to some of the good bodybuilding magazines, this is where you get the latest breaking news, but then do your own cross referencing and due dilligence, dont take it all for face value, lots of stuff is just BS. As in the case of some supplements, where the product may in fact work, but only at such high dosages that it is both physically and economically impractical (like Pyruvate). Pick up a BB book and learn the basics. Lift heavy, practice perfect form, eat healthy and most importantly rest, working out when still sore does nothing other than expose you to injury. Dont overtrain..hitting the nail after its already set in the wood wont make a better structure, youll only damage the piece your working on
