Anyone big into bodybuilding/lifting?

Ive been working out on and off (mostly on) for about 16yrs. I never competed though.

I went through the bulking up phases and all the fads and new supplements and such. Some work some dont....I learned to check my sources before plopping down my hard earned cash, especially after grad school.

Along with what the others may have added Ill say this much. Work out with intensity, if your having a conversation while your lifting weights..you're never gonna get anywhere. I see people go to the gym for years and never progress...no intensity; their jaws get more exercise than their biceps. Rest, your body grows when youre resting (days off and sleep). Get your form down perfectly, I see too many people lifting weight that they cannot handle and as a result their form is horrible; aside from poor developement you risk injuring yourself severly.

Pick up a book by Mike Mentzer and or Dorian Yates, these highly successful body builders follow a High Intensity workout system, whereby you do less and gain more, by maximizing their time at the gym and by really emphasising rest.

Of the supplements out there that I take and believe work, they have clinical research behind them and have proven to work by independent laboratories. You can even go read up on them in published science papers. But as with anything YRMV.

*mega dosages of Vitamin C, I take 6k milligrams a day
*CLA
*HMB
*Flax seed oil
*If you dont drink much milk, calcium, magnesium, zinc supplement combo
*Multivitamin (I take two doses a day)
*N02, the new kid on the block, the things I have read on this supplement have been positive and I can say I think it really works...even in your wanker!
*Creatine monohydrate

Then there are the steroid precursors, which are natural and legal, and only differ from real steroids by a missing compound or two. The thing is, once they are in your body they become real steroids your body supplies the missing compounds (science is great). These work, some better and more safely than others, however you risk the side effects that full blown steroids give you: acne, testicular atrophy, gynomastia, mood swings, water retention, elevated blood pressure, male pattern baldness and possibly complications late in life like, prostate englargement, and cardiovascular diseases.

There is too much more to say about this topic, my suggestion is to get a subscription to some of the good bodybuilding magazines, this is where you get the latest breaking news, but then do your own cross referencing and due dilligence, dont take it all for face value, lots of stuff is just BS. As in the case of some supplements, where the product may in fact work, but only at such high dosages that it is both physically and economically impractical (like Pyruvate). Pick up a BB book and learn the basics. Lift heavy, practice perfect form, eat healthy and most importantly rest, working out when still sore does nothing other than expose you to injury. Dont overtrain..hitting the nail after its already set in the wood wont make a better structure, youll only damage the piece your working on ;)

What's wrong with small nuts and having breasts?

I agree with alot of what Rich says. Rich, does this make me a lemming? :) I saw some of your poser shots in the den (now if that isn't a plug for the den), you're toned but you'd need more beef to compete, but believe me competing isn't everything. Looking back, I'm glad I've done it. The dedication and goal setting lessons can be applied to other aspects of life, etc. Now I'm just looking like one of these old retired wrestlers (well, not THAT bad). At least I'll have a couple trophies to show my kid when he's old enough to understand. "That's not YOU, dad."

Mike Mentzer died fairly recently. His brother Ray (Mr. America, and I believe Universe) followed him to the grave about a week later. Both with heart problems! Yates looks like a walking Pharmacy! It's amazing that something so
healthy has become so unhealthy. That's one of the reason's I got out of competition, with every level you climb, so does the steroid factor. I could not believe the amount of sh*t guys were taking on the Regional Level, just nuts.

I was in Las Vegas in Oct. 2001 and 2002 to see the Mr. Olympia competitions. It's just a gas hanging out with all the f'in' freaks, they're everywhere!! I saw chicks that were bigger than I was when I was competing, it's craziness I tell
you!! Had brief conversations with Gunther Schlierkamp, Ronnie Coleman, King Kamali and Jay Cutler (not comp. that year, saw him at his booth/trade show). Really felt Gunther should have won in 2002, this stuff is so political, I wonder why these guys do it, not worth it.

Zachman 6'4", 312 lbs, 10% bf. You should think about professional bodybuilding man. I believe Ronnie Coleman and Jay Cutler are around 3 bills contest weight.

400g of protein a day my A$$. your body only uses around 80g a day. . .the rest is just peed out. . .and too much protein can destroy your kidneys. . .Im on a very stricks diet andlifting regiment, and I can be the first to say that if you want to eat the right foods increase calories and maintain a lower carb not low carb diet with average amounts of fat. . cause your body needs that too. If you're serious about a weight program. . meals, and supplements (because they do help, and arent necessarily bad for you) send me a PM

I lift 5 days/week. While I'm still young, I figure I might as well be in shape.

I've got the rest of my life to be a fat, balding, webwheeler. :)

pfft. Three days a week you need to find sum healthy womans. They whup some shape into you girly men.

Im curious as to if anyone else out there weight trains/bodybuilds regularly? About 3 weeks ago I decided to start and wanted to get some ideas on foods, suppliments and diff. exercises (how many sets/reps?). Im asking mostly for people with personal experience.
ha, yeah I do actually but it doesn't help a bit- 19 and my body mass index is that of a dehydrated hobbit... even "wieght gain" with no avail- eat more than anyone I know
