anybody got a tool to adjust the end caps on an 8.25?

Got any gear marking compound? I'd like to see a pattern on the gears just for sh*ts and giggles. don't forget to put a load on the pinion with a shop towel if you do.

Nope, no red lead. I bet I could use lipstick though. I'll have to search how to preload it

lipstick works, the pattern is off it's hitting the inside edge of the coast side and the outside edge of the drive side. I took a pic but it's hard to see.

Everything says to adjust pinion to get it right, I didn't touch the pinion

is what I have, increase backlash? It is a little tight...

Looks like it's a tad tight. Got a way to measure it?

you're gonna love this. I don't have a magnetic dial indicator and harbor freight didn't have any, so I'm using a pair of dial calipers kind of clamped against the housing. it's about .05 which is a bit tight but I figure it's probably a little looser than that. not accurate, I know. I don't think it's tight enough to make that kind of howling noise though

this whole thing has definitely got to be one of the worst ideas I've had in quite awhile, the main reason I'm worried about it is the noise, and I have to run the jeep to oklahoma city and live down there away from my garage and toold for 17 weeks and then back to denver, and I don't want the thing DJ'ing on me on the interstate. Sadly I've set up mazda diffs before and never had a problem lol

I'm pretty sure you meant .005" which is a wee bit tight.

My garage. You're welcome to borrow my HF base and indicator if you wanna drive down here for it. I can leave it out for ya, gotta go to a birthday day dinner tonight.
thanks man, I don't want to burn the miles to run all the way down there though.
Maybe checker or home depot has them.

frank you da freakin man.

I had too much lash as you suspected, set up the dial indicator and got it tweaked to .008 perfectly, checked the tooth pattern and it was perfect, put it all back together and everything is happy, or at least no louder than it was before. I'm going to assume that's just how this gear set is and will always be, and on the bright side I could probably set up gears again later if I needed to.
