Anybody ever moved gearset and locker between axles?

I think I have a tweaked D44 housing. This is the second wheel bearing that has burned up. I am looking at getting a different housing and moving over the Detroit and gears from one housing to another. How close did your shim stack end up working out to?

I was hoping to not have to get a master install kit to do the swap. Anybody got a bunch of left over shims? I have a full shop and press and have done many gear setups, just not for about 5 years.

I agree, new bearings are cheap insurance, but if they are still like new from the original gear and locker install then just get a minor install kit.

I was just hoping that things would be fairly easy. Anybody out there have a couple of setup bearings for a D44?

I'm working too much and haven't had time to do anything. I am going to check the axle out and see if it is really bent or not. Where I go from there really depends on how much cash I can scrape together.

In an ideal world, I would grab a full width 9" from a 78 Bronco and get a used Detroit and a set of 4.56 gears and call it done.

When you are working 55 hours a week and you have a 1.5 hour roundtrip commute, it is hard to get much done.
