Using a case spreader on a trussed axle?

I've got to swap the ring/pinion in this trussed D44 axle. I hoping to spread the case about 0.010" when adding shims for the carrier preload. Since the axle is trussed as shown, is it even worth the attempt? I don't have a case spreader yet (I'll have to make one) and don't want to go through the hassle of making one if using it on a trussed housing is a non-starter.

Not worried about carrier removal. I'm hoping to use a spreader to make carrier install easier. I was wondering if the truss on the axle makes the housing too stiff to even use a spreader.

They sure make shim installation easier but if you have to make one???

I built one, but so far have not needed it:

Case Spreader is on the first page

If I were still local I could loan it to you Art. In fact, I will probably be making a run down there in October and could bring it along then, if you don't mind shipping it back to me.

Thanks for the offer but I ended up buying a spreader today. Turns out I didn't have the scrap metal I thought I did to fab one and buying the steel bars and hardware would have been too costly. (Have you priced steel lately?! ) Was only slightly more $ to just buy a cheap one off Amazon and not have to fuss with fabbing one up.

Did you break it at sierra fest Art?
No, I had to bail on SierraFest last minute because I discovered some chipped teeth on the rear ring gear. Couldn't get parts in time to make the event.

To answer my own question...I ended up buying a spreader and there was no problemo in spreading the case with the truss on the axle.
