Any idea what's up for Winterfest?

Have fun in March guys and gals, I have to report to Fort Lewis, WA in March :(

Maybe I'll get a chance to do a run with the MWC before January, but the schedule is tight.

Dammit John ... you backed out of Redbird ... now yer sayin' Winterfest is a problem. When are you supposed to report? Hopefully you'll get your priorities in order!

Looks like the lugs are loose on that back tire there Dude.

Sweet! A Winterfest in the spring. Like holding the Easter Jeep Safari not on Easter.

Can we push Xmas back until February?

Now the weather will be nice for sure.

Actually, Spring is not official until March 21st (or near that date). We've also had some of our worst winter weather in early March in past years ... in '84, I was snowed in at a new job for a week because of a blizzard. There's a good chance it could be a true Winterfest.

Is there a possibility you can make it Okie?

All signs point to probable.

What happened to the January idea?
March 4th I'll be on Maui, and heading to Kauai.
Guess it'll be a John-free event - and no Scott-free Ale for you guys either :twak:
Damn John, it's hard to find a winter date when you won't be in Hawaii.

I'll also add, John, that you are becoming a rather evil person expecting us to feel sorry for you ... you spending time with sand, surf, beautiful hula dancers, in a tropic climate while we spend time with mud, rocks, barky local women in a cold winter climate. I'd say you should brew two kegs of Scott-Free Ale for us! :D

The MWC BOD appointed Brad and lebxj and Okie to the "winterfest committe".
There will not be a vote, This is not a democracy, evryone voting on everything does not work, just look at the Chapter Stickers thread.
The committe suggested Disney, the MWC BOD has put a Kabosh on that idea.
Here is why,

1, Not enough members know the park well enough to lead trails.
2, Two months is not enough time to plan an event like this in an unfamiliar area.

Brad should have not posted their idea this early.

The appropriate answer would have been...

Bob, A committe is working on it.
Thanks for asking, we will let you know as soon as something is decided.

The only reason I asked is because I wanted to know if you needed volunteers. I have been to Winterfest every year since I joined NAXJA. To me Winterfest has always been about wheeling with the Midwest group in inclimate conditions. Yes that means freezing your arse off. We all wheel all over the place all summer but Winterfest gives us a reason to wheel when usually we'd be trying our best to stay warm. Sort of an irrational wheeling trip. Gives us a reason to get off our fat buts and do some wheeling in the dead of winter. Funny thing is if the weather is rather warm and dry people are rather disappointed.

Winterfest has always been at Attica, not the greatest wheeling spot in the world but plenty of fun for everyone for a short weekend wheeling trip. It's definitely not a spot that would attract people from all over the US, but IMHO that has never been the point. For me OK or even KY will be a 10 to 12 hour drive, not exactly a central MW local if you ask me. Winterfest has always been a "local" weekend event, not a "national" event, and I personally think it should remain that way. The MWC can hold a national event at another time during the year. Something a little further south as is being planned for Winterfest. I can say that if Winterfest is held as far south as is being talked about I likely will not be able to make it. This alone may be enough reason to hold it in the south :). But I truly think Winterfest is much more about tradition, braving tough weather, and socializing, that a great wheeling location. I also think we should worry more about keeping it accessible to MW people than attracting people from other chapters. We can have a new event for the purpose of attracting others.

I know that this is not a "democracy" but the people who have been put in charge of making these decisions should have the chance to hear from the people they represent, and also the people who have been to Winterfest year after year.

Damn, he's on to us.

I too have attended all the winterfest with the exception of the first (I was not yet a member). As bob knows, I too believe that winterfest should be in Attica, even tho I chimed in and agreed to KY. The more I think about it the more I feel inclined to denounce the KY vote and go back to an Attica vote. I'm going to freez my arse off this year w/o a top and doors, but winterfest has become a tridition in Attica. Honestly, winterfest isn't about the wheeling to me anymore, rather being with friends for the weekend, this was proved to me last weekend when I wheeled my dd with many of the same friends. I wheeled KY (nat bridge) a few weeks ago and very much fell in love with the place, and would be very happy to have a MW event there sometime, just not in Feb and don't call it winterfest.

It won't be winterfest with out the sub zero temps, the bus as a wind breaker and les bringing his camper filled with straw.

If this is not a democracy to a certain point, then I will be very dissapointed. if the members don't have a say in what's going on then look for my name to be in black. We've made winterfest a great time for many years with out a chapter and I'm sure we can still do it with out one in the future.

that's all.

see ya, bye

I think this organization technically is a democracy. Those of us assigned or elected to National or Chapter BOD positions exist to represent, organize, and lead. There are times when circumstances dictate a decision be made without a "vote", but these same decisions are to be made based upon the good of the organization and perceived opinions of the majority.

This is just my opinion. I also agree with Bob and Dan that Winterfest belongs in Attica with the cold, nasty weather.

I remember someone else having that same opinion.
Like Wheeler said, it means something to us.
I slept in a room last weekend with JJ and Wheeler, and had a great time, from what I am told.
I am not against the MWC whatsoever, but leave Winterfest the way I found it 4 years ago and I will be (somewhat) happy.
Thanks for listening.

oh, yes you did, just look at JJ's face.

Scott Mac, unless I have all four of my kids with me, you've got it. Bring your snow pants.

So please tell me, what is the date for winterfest, I must plan a couple mths in advance, plus my Jeep is going through a front suspension transformation so I need a dead line.

I am glad we have a committee that no one elected doing it's darndest to destroy a tradition that they know nothing about.
Maybe its a coincidence, but it seems this site turned sour about the time the MWC came into being.
Elections were held by 4 guys drinking in a garage, who had been members of the club for a month or so...Winterfest is being hijacked 12 hours away...and instead of breaking our junk, we now have 482 running jokes that pertain to pies.
Nice group of midwest wheelers we had, once.
Thanks for everything.

that the same simple-minded reasoning I expect from the pharisaical subgroup that were out to defame some who attended paragon, not you.

I assure you, its a coincidence.

I completely agree with you guys.

I'm hereby making a motion to change the chapter name from the "Midwest Chapter" to the "Badlands Chapter".

NAXJA is growing and you should grow with it or start a new club. The Pirates of NAXJA. I never complained when the Disney plan was shot down. I realized that dwelling on it would only make me no better than some bitter northern midwesterner.
Life goes on.

I thought it was a good idea to consider alternative destinations for winterfest. Personally speaking, I am tired of the badlands, and theres a couple places that i haven't been to, thought we could give it a go. however, the majority didn't see it the same way and thats fine too. There's a TRADITION to be considered. If you think the midwest crew ONLY wheels the badlands, you are grossly mis-informed. There will be plenty of opportunities to reconsider a chapter run to OK and KY, but te majority has chosen the badlands for winterfest.

suck it up and deal.
