Antifreeze disposal

Any place local that I can dispose of used antifreeze at? The local convenience centers only take used oil, and the convenience center at Campbell is for on-Post peeps only.

You should have a Hazardous Waste site somewhere in your city/county. They take things like used car batteries, all the big items that normal garbage doesn't collect, and just about any household chemicals such as Coolant. Just had to drop mine off at one of these places a couple of weeks ago. Didn't cost me anything out here.

In the county I live in they allow us to pour it into the drain:dunno: as long as it is only a couple of gallons every once in a while and your not a business or repair shop. I don't agree with it but that is what I was told on the phone by local government. We do not have a disposal site for AF at this time or I would carry it somewhere to get rid of it. I take my oil to Advance Auto.

But I use the environmentally safe AF anyway just in case a hose takes a dump on the trail. I'm not a tree hugger but I try to do my part to protect the environment and keep my impact as little as possible.

The really stupid thing is I tried calling two numbers of antifreeze recyclers and neither one is in business.

Thats crazy. I would be all for our Government running some type of free(we pay tthroug taxes) recycling operation. It would give people jobs, and help the enviroment. I wouldn't mind paying a bit more tax for something like that. Instead we are paying for Gm and Chrysler and they still go bankrupt.

call the county trash collection service. In raleigh they had a truck go to a certain location (usually a parking lot near an auto parts store) once a month, and they would take it there. You had to call to find out where it was though.

just find a lake... preferably a protected one.... and dump it in

..... actually i just throw it in with the used oil unless its the non toxic biodegradable kind, then i just dilute it in a bucket and wash it away

Many landfills & recycling locations have a tank designated for used antifreeze disposal.
Or
Advance Auto
Auto Zone
O'Reilly Auto Parts
N.A.P.A
Most of them will take it, as they will motor oil.

When I worked at advance we would not touch anti freeze, and if the manager thought that was what you were dumping he would watch you to make sure. I am pretty sure that advance as a company will not take it.

The Autozone and the O'Reilly's around here will not take it, and they would not in NC either. I am not sure about NAPA ad I have never tried.

our land fill only takes oil as do our parts shops... it's crazy really to have a lethal liquid and no where to safely dispose of it.

That being said, I've always been told that the stuff never goes bad; strain it, filter it, and reuse it, color not withstanding.

I leave it out for my neighbor's cat that keeps crapping in my yard :D

I can definetly say that Advance Auto nor Autozone will take AF, and if you mix it with your oil then they will ask you not to bring your oil back there if they catch you.

ok so after you corrected those who have lied to me, I looked into it and it seems that 10 years is the number all the experts agree on. so, strain it, filter it , and reuse it for ten years (give or take, depending on what you believe).
