Anthracite Wheeling --- Nov 9th

have a good time, cant make this one.....

I had a freakin blast. a few pics ill upload tomor. they are just cellphone ones. big thanks to the whole anthracite organization over there. had a great time. the guides were awesome and helpful. no real broken stuff today other than a brake line and andy's bent trackbar mount. wish we could have all wheeled together. was nice meeting all you guys. cant wait til the next one.

What a great time. Nice to meet so many new folks too. Things were a bit slow with us getting into the woods. There was about 40 or so Jeeps there (besides our group), and another whole group of ATV's and UTV's that had to get registered and into the park as well. The place was so packed that it was hard to find parking for the tow rig/trailer. They are not quite organized yet to make the waiver signing and payment process a smooth operation. They are making some great progress though. They have a paved entry and a building built (complete with garages) for registration and park staff. None of this was opened yet though, so that is why parking was so tight. We got our trail guides and got in the woods by approx. 10am.

We ended up breaking into two groups. This just worked better for the trail system up there. There was a green group that had approx. 7 rigs (I think, may be off here though), and a blue/black group that had 4 rigs. I am not going to remember everyones names, but it was great to meet you guys. I was kind of hoping to catch up with the green group again as the day went on, but we never did. I just checked out Brads video (always good to see you too bud!!) and it looks like you guys saw many of the same things we did. There are some neat places to check out in that side of the park. An underground coal fire, VERY deep crevasses (that I can only guess were massive coal strip mines at one time), some old buildings, really pretty views and some amazing potential for more trails. We drove 3 miles through an access road before we even got to AOAA's property!! That side of the park is 4000 acres, and is not as developed as the east side.

The blue/black group consisted of Ed our trail leader (and his wife), Larry and Blue in the TJ ( I would wheel with you guys ANYTIME!!) the JK (don't remember their names, but they had a cool dog that my son Jeremy loved playing with), gotboost- Derek and his brother in the D60'ed and 39'ed XJ (otherwise known as the "point and shoot" Jeep for the day), me and Jeremy, and our other trail leader Rich. We headed in (and in and in... its a BIG place!!) and ran a black line that went through a "cut". The trail starts on top of a ridge, and you drive down through this "cut" in the ground. Its a cool line. One of our trail guides broke a front brakeline, but that didn't take long to fix. We then ran around and back to the top of the ridge and this is where I realized my track bar bracket was bending out (why is my steering wheel not centered anymore... oh cr@@p!!), towards the coil spring. I recently changed the bracket, and had a local shop weld a stiffener and the bracket on, but they didn't attach it properly to the bottom of the unibody. It limited my turning to the left, and I REALLY didn't want to bend it any further (did I mention we were more than 3 MILES into the woods??), so this limited me to easier trails for the rest of the day. We ran a large rock garden similar to Rock Creek at RC (where I spotted Derek through the hardest lines I could find, and he made them look easy), and a few more cool blue/black lines throughout the day. I was a bit bummed I couldn't wheel my Jeep as hard as I wanted to, but it was still a good day. We saw a large section of the park, and that was one of the main goals of this trip.

We got back to the staging area around 4:30pm (I changed out the flat tire on my trailer... yeah, it wasn't my day...big thanks to Ed our trail guide for use of his high lift and impact gun) got loaded up and headed for home. To sum up, I met some great folks that I would wheel with anytime.... and AOAA is an amazing place!!! It will be a great place to host events and large meets in the future once they officially open for business. Right now, the projected timing for that is late spring next year. Hopefully they can make that happen!!!

See you on the trails!!

Did I get the pass side too?? :anon::D

The one on the drivers side was cool. You stood that rock right straight up on its side with the front tire, then drove off it and it crunched right into the rocker.

I called the shop that did the work on our way home. He suggested that I just drop it off on the way home, so I did. I am sure they will fix it up right.

Jeep will be ready, but I am not sure I'll make it out. Dec. is a busy month for us. I hope to, but it will probably be last minute. Are you going to have an exo and welded in rockers by then? The place I took my Jeep for the track bar work does welded in rockers too. 1/4 wall 2x6, with capped ends. Its pretty cheap too. If your interested hit me with a PM and I'll pass along the details.

looks awesome. Sad i couldn't make it :(

Andy did thet not use the 2 bolts on the bottom of the TB bracket? sounds like a great time otherwise anf from the pics looks like really nice terrain

That's what they did. They welded it in that area, but since they put a stiffener on the outside of the subframe, the holes weren't anywhere near lining up. When I picked it up after having the work done, I was thinking it might be a problem, but even I didn't realize how much those bolts sandwich all that sheet metal together in that area. It will be fixed right though...
