Nope. The '88 is the earlier design that is more complicated but, in my opinion, looks better because it doesn't have the seam on the upper and lower trim pieces.
1989 - Note the headlamp door is separate from the upper and lower trim
1996 - Headlamp door and trim have been integrated and simplified, in fact the main grille is now part of the trim instead of a separate piece like the '89. Because of this there is now a definite seam line between the grille section and headlamps.
