All Things Guns

So my buddy Paul informed me that he has a 5gal bucket full of used wheel weights. I'll be in the lead farming business for a while!

Welcome to BRD. Black Rifle Disease.

When you have leftover parts, it means you have to build another ;)

And this will help with the build. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6AZ1jxJGRM

ar15.com is a useful source for stuff. Their Equipment Exchange is pretty good too.

...if I can direct you to yet another gun site.

Ha, yeah I actually found that website yesterday but have not joined yet. I actually got this assembled in about a half hour yesterday. Went a lot smoother than expected. Youtube was a huge help along with Ar15.com article.

edit:
Decided after looking to go with a magpul MOE trigger guard, that is why it does not have one yet.

What is your other one? Terre Haute Guns?

No. I've actually only been there once. I called to see if they had a particular rifle in stock, the kid told me yes then when I walked in and told him I called and what I was after he started looking in the pistol case. Told him it was a rifle and he just looked at me with a dumbfounded look and said "oh no, we don't have one." Never been back since.

the 2 I frequent are Top Guns and M&S Armament in Clinton.

I am adding to my "want to go to list" the Knob Creek Machine gun shoot even just as a spectator.

Oh, hey Dustin. I don't know what you've looked into about your fire control group, but that CMMG trigger can use a good polishing.

I used some rather aggressive sand paper to *carefully* knock down the bulk of the machine marks. After I got those out of there, I stepped down to my model car sand paper (probably pine wood derby axle polishing papers. If it is what I can currently find on Amazon, it goes down to 8000 grit. Could be less though.) to do the finishing. It came out near mirror and took out all the crap of the trigger pull.

This will give you the info you need and then some. I'm actually planning on doing the set screw mod sooner or later, but I've been busy and haven't gotten to my bench.

I paid no mind to the additional spring mods and went with the JP Enterprises 4.5# springs. To be totally honest, my finger gauge didn't tell much difference between the factory hammer & trigger springs and the JP springs, but it sure feels good. Smooth take up and breaks like glass. It actually feels worlds better than my 700 trigger that breaks great from the factory. It's just heavy...

Thanks for the heads up, will definitely have to check into doing this.

As for the upper I have not set anything in stone as of yet other than I will be using some sort of 16" barrel and going with the carbine length gas system and likely going with a low profile gas block. I do not like the look of the A2 front sight so that will not be going on this. I'm still looking at hand guards. Not sure about BCG and not worried about an ambi charging handle as I or anyone else I know is left handed. I will probably through a Magpul MOE stock on it too before it is all said and done. I have a cheaper scope laying around I will likely through on it until I can do a nice dot or lower power scope.

When it comes time to look into stuff, ar15.com (affectionately referred to as arf.com on the boards) has a sticky with all the "in stock" threads at the top of their "build it yourself" forum. Those threads stay updated pretty regularly.

Off the bat, I would say PSA (Palmetto State Armory) is a great place to look for quality and budget friendly parts.

Yeah I've checked out PSA and some other manufacturers websites. I'll tell you though I never realized hand guards were so damn expensive. I like the look of the longer free float guards(11-15") and like the smooth bottom. Not sure that a rail on top is a must as I don't really plan to use sights I will be using either a low power optic or red dot most likely.

If you don't want to have BUIS, I would go with low power glass. I would imagine, like most Jeep guys, you're on a budget so an ACOG would be out of your price range...but, the idea is that you won't want a failing piece of glass and not have BUIS. If you're going to go with a red dot, I would still want BUIS. Especially since you can use them for co-witnessing.

I'm about 50/50 on setting my junk up with BUIS, but I can definitely see the merit.

Hand guards, yeah. They can get steep. You had said that you didn't want to use an A2 FSB, but that is a cheap method to getting a front sight that you may or may not use. At the same time, you can use a longer free float hand guard with key mod or some other form of changeable rails that covers a low-pro gas block and still enable you to have a spot to place a front sight that will give you a longer sight radius.

It's all up to you in the end. Just build it how you like. And you may or may not change things down the road. Legos are easy to alter ;)

The lower power optic is what I will most likely do out of all my options. I'll probably go with something from Vortex as you get a lot of bang for your buck with them and their warranty and customer service are excellent. I am on a budget like most everyone else but that is one of the many reasons I chose to build.

Got a call from my daughter this week. She has requested me to build her husband a custom hunting rifle to be ready for next years hunting season. He works for a farmer with 1000's of acres of some of the best hunting land in North Central Idaho, and they let pretty much no one other than family on it.
Initial specs are:
30-06 Spr
Lawton long action
Shilen or Kreiger bbl 24"
A wood stock, this is way old school, may have to get her to consider a quality synthetic or at least laminate.
Detachable mag system, probably from Seekins Precision, I love the push button.
Weaver 4-20X50 Super Slam Euro scope (she works for the company that owns Weaver)

That sounds awesome! Planning on a Jewell or Timney for that? Or maybe some kind of super sexy 2 stage? I'm gonna guess a 20MOA base and a bedded action as well...I mean, it's not like you're a stranger to all this.

Aside from white tail, what other kind of big game is normal out there? I would imagine elk and black bear...

I'm unaware of the geography of Idaho. I'm guessing high hills/low mountains... Any plains?

Well a Timney would probably be my choice, bedded for sure with probably a custom aluminum block, yes 20MOA base also from Seekins Precision. There is pretty much everything out there, whitetail, mule deer, elk, moose, bear, coyote, cougar, wolf, raccoon, turkey, pheasant, chucker, dove, partridge, grouse, I'm sure I'm forgetting something. Right now steelhead season is kicking in too, and then don't forget salmon, catfish, trout, bass, crappie, bluegill, etc.
Terrain is everything depending on what part, where they live it's 40min to 5000ft from 800ft that the town we are from is. But lots of rolling hills that you all would call mountains around here.
