i was wondering if anyone knows of any air mattresses that are cut to fit in the back of an xj? I dont like having to set up a tent when i camp and i dont want to buy one. please let me know of any ideas that you might have or if anyone has used one of these and like or dislikes about them.

maybe get some foam or something to cut and fit it. how tall are you? im 6 foot and from corner to corner it was just too short and uncomfortable imo. but i dont know about doing an air mattress back there. they do make some that fit pickup beds, maybe find one that is close to the dementions of the xj and go from there. good luck

Last time I went camping I got lazy and slept in the back of the XJ. At first I tried just sleeping on the cargo floor with the bottom of the rear bench removed. Probably the most uncomfortable attempt at sleep I've ever made. Out of desperation, I grabbed the Coleman full size (double) air matress that I usually use in the tent and threw it in the back of the Jeep. I found that if you partially inflate it, you can make it work. Getting onto it is a little tricky (it bottoms out wherever you are crawling) but once you lay down, the air pressure balances out and it feels like you're sleeping on a water bed. Tossing and turning will make it bottom out as well. Not ideal, but it worked in a pinch.

BTW, I'm 5'8" and I had to sleep diagonally with my feet hanging over the end of the rear seat back to fit. There was just barely enough room for me and my dog back there.

I love the idea of being self-contained in the XJ but for me the spacing is just too tight. I'm about 6'-0" and there was no way I could fit in there. When I'm camping I use an orange thermarest backpacking pad.

You really shouldn't talk about the little lady that way :nono:

If you could get/make one of those canopies that attaches to the hatch when you open it then there'd be a lot more room. Either let your feet hang out the back or rig up some sort of platform extension.

You guys aren't doing it right. If you take the bottom part of the seat out of the jeep completly and then move both front seats all the way forward you can sleep pretty comfy in the back. I'm 6'0 and fit just fine doing that.

If you put a twin mattress in and blow it up it will fit betweent the wheel wells.
