Also is there a way to tighten the slop out of the steering box? I had an older volkswagen that I could tighten a set screw in the steering box to compensate for the wear between the gears. Is that possible on the Cherokee? I have a little play in the steering wheel that I don't like.

I THINK it is an 86 Waggoner steering box that will replace yours and be much tighter, but verify that first, I "think" I heard that once. Somebody else said a Durango/dakota box, but I have never heard that first hand.
It has been my experience that the steering box is rarely the source of loose steering. Things that I have found to cause it are (roughly in order)
Alignment
Shot track bar / loose track bar bracket
Tire problems
Shot tie rod ends
Shot control arm bushings
Loose steering box bolts
Shot ball joints
Loose steering box.
Others may have a different list or different order but that is a quick off the top of my head prioitized list of causes.
