98 ZJ starting issue

Little back story.. This Jeep was running when aquired. Parked infront of garage for last two years. Changed oil/filter, complete tune up.

Last winter we needed my son's YJ closer to garage for a cord to reach, son jumped in ZJ and turned on key and popped in Neutral (weak battery)

He forgot to put back in gear and turn off key. Now with fresh battery the Jeep will not start.

Yesterday i replaced the CPS, cranks well no start.

Released fuel pressure by pressing schrader valve... turn on ign, hear pump run and have strong pressure at valve again.

I tried swapping a few relays around.. no help.

Ignition coil?

Although i had fuel pressure at rail, the low fuel icon was on. Dumped in 4 gallon of fresh fuel.

Replaced ingition coil... no start

Replaced plugs again.. no start. Cap and rotor are fine.

Swapped the ASD relay with starter relay again.. no start.

Working alone so i cant verify spark, will tonight when son is home.


What else could it be? What could have gotten damaged by leaving key on for a few weeks with a less than full charged battery?


I dont have a code reader, may have to go borrow one.

This ZJ does not have a security system.

Is the CEL on?
You know about the fuel/spark/air thing.. Let's start with verifying spark, It sounds to me its ASD related, (i hate the ASD system in ZJ's)

edit: You checked the ASD relay? What about the Small 20amp ASD Fuse?

Check the wiring behind the head. Some times it rubs and eats through the insulation.

I read your reply a few hours ago.. before i went to a Dr's appt. Came home, had diner and laid down for a bit. Got to thinking about the Jeep and your post..

It dawned on me that i had a no start with the XJ this past spring. It turned out to be the 20amp fuse in PDB underhood. So i started thinking that i had a spare somewhere... no i didnt. Where the hell did i get the 20 amp fuse?!

I think i remember pulling it off the ZJ.. :twak:

I'll verify this tomorrow am. :laugh3:

I've had trouble getting FI vehicles started after sitting a long time.

Buy a can of starting fluid, and have your son crank it over while you spray the starting fluid into the intake.

I took the 20amp fuse from my XJ and reinserted it in the empty slot on ZJ. Started right up.

I had that fuse blow on the highway... No CEL.. nothing.

Come to find out.. after scratching my head vigorously in confusion, I found the second o2 Wires were rubbing on the rear drive shaft..

I almost went dealer on that one:eye:
