98 XJ Build

Yes you will need to pick up a shaft bc once you get the SYE on the old rear shaft will NOT work with it. If you need recovery points, I have a set of new tow hook brackets that you can run with your front bumper. I had them on a rig for WF last year and they were never used and then taken off as soon as I got home bc I sold the rig. $50 to your door w/ the hardware if you are interested.

Cheese "hooks up front, receiver hitch out back, you are golden!" Man

PM Incoming Cheese Man...

Got the rear fenders done today with the cut and fold method. I just trimmed the rear bumper caps rather than take them off, I considered taking them off first but when the bolts were just spinning rather than loosening they made my decision easy. I think they came out pretty good. I'm going to the paint store tomorrow or Tuesday and picking up a can of underbody spray to go over them with that rather than putting the wheel well molding on them. I also did a little trimming on what is left of the front bumper, as well as moved the horns and tucked them in a little better.

Tomorrow its getting an alignment and oil change, then I should be good to go for the winter. I'm just going to pick up the tow hooks for ChzMan and try to find a rear hitch setup for now and make the SYE the next bigger mod.

Haha right on maybe I'll do that when I finish the fenders this weekend. I noticed they didn't seem to be on too well but figured it would look like crap under them.

Nope just double sided foam tape. I used Chemstrip(?) in a spray can as I was out of my good 3M stuff. Took me about an hour to scrap and clean the adhesive off.

Good deal, my buddy will have something, we have been doing all the work at his body shop.

You inspired me to do mine. I will say it definitely didn't turn out as nice as yours and I'm disappointed, but it had to be done. I was rubbing going around corners. Now I'm just waiting for the paint to dry. I'm supposed to go 4 wheelin tomorrow.

Yea there's no way around it really. At least you're going wheeling! I considered going to Badlands tomorrow just to run around on some light trails but I really need to get this U-Joint on the drivers side changed before I do that.

I picked up some underbody spray today and the ProtektoTrim came yesterday. I'll get the fenders finished up this weekend and post the final pictures.

Nice build, looks great!! I wanted to pass along that if you use black rubber door trim on your front fenders it works great, gives it a clean look and prevents the tire from getting cut up. My local parts store carries it and just buy the kit and apply it to the fenders. There is enough to do both sides.

Yep that's the plan lol.. I'll throw some before and after pics up Saturday.

ChzMan.. PayPal incoming.

Update: My name is red!

Finally got this thing back in the garage today.

First job on order was the u-joint on the drivers side wheel/axle. Once we had it all apart we realized the ball joint was trashed, so went another trip to AutoZone to do that since it was all apart. Got those buttoned up then finished up the fenders.. undercoating spray on the back fenders and ProtektoTrim on the front.

Let me add, the ProtektoTrim wasn't exactly what I thought it would be. I was pointed in the direction of the 5/8" band wheel well modling and I was under the impression it would sort of wrap around the edge like a door edge guard and that wasn't the case, it just sticks to the outside of the fender. Looks decent, but kind of pointless other than cosmetic really. I went ahead and put it on and just used a body hammer to smooth out the edge of the fender as best as I could, came out decent actually.

Finished Product

ya. that protecto-trip stuff is garbage. but so many people recommend it... idk why. i used some other stuff that was more what you were looking for, wrapped around the edge of the metal. even sprung for stuff with "quality" 3M adhesive. the first hot summer day made is so pliable and soft that it started to sag, i peeled it right off and threw it away.

on another note, the cut and fold looks good. did you weld the tabs down or just hammer them flat?

They're just hammered flat. I tried not to cut too far, thats where you get into trouble and make it look like crap... hammered it all down with a body hammer for the most part. Tried to make them as straight and smooth as possible.
