97 no air...???

ive had this 97 xj for about a month now...havn't need the air till now, but now that i need it, it wont work...i can turn it on and it blows....but its hot, ive tried different combinations of the switches to see if theve got turned around, and thats not the problem...does a 97 have freon...does it need to be charged??? just dont no anything about a/c so any help would be appreciated.

First thing check to see if your A/C system is holding a charge and if all the fuses are good. I hope it's not an evaporator leak. Probably is though.

it probably just needs to be recharged, i bought my 97 in september and the ac was just barely working then, now the compressor wont kick on so im assuming its just low on r-134a

Keep in mind that the 97+ XJ and several year ZJ's had crappy evaporators that rotted out about the time the warranty ended. Tough to find the leak on too, took me three cans of dye laced 134a for it to finally show up in the drain tube over the frame rail on the firewall. I'm going to have to do something about it this month for sure, not going thru another summer w/o air...
