I attempted to add factory cruise control to my '99 XJ Sport. I was able to buy the right side switch from Standard Motor Parts, but they'd discontinued the left side. I used a servo from a junkyard, and added a connection to the clock spring. The actual clock spring ribbon has the conductor, they just omitted the lead and connector that goes to the switches, so I added the missing link. I confirmed 5vdc is present at the switch leg of the clock spring and it changes when I press a button... I had to build a temporary left side switch, and used the resistor values published for that year. Nothing happens when I press the "on-off" switch, no dash light, no cruise control. I need to replace the clockspring now, because I loused up the airbag connection and I have a fault light on. (no, I was NOT in the driver's seat the first time I started it up and tried to test it.) Is it possible that I have an ECU that doesn't support cruise control, or maybe I got a bad servo and the system can see that and won't come on? It may well be I've killed the clockspring, though.
