It's not too hard, you don't have to disconnect any refrigerant lines, maybe just un-bolt the compressor to get at it more easily. I've never changed one on a Jeep, but generally there's a bolt, followed by a snap ring or two and that's about it. It's possible that there are tiny shims in there that look like washers, and if so, be really careful that you don't lose any and that they all make it back on in the same place with the new clutch that they were with the old one. If you get it wrong, you'll have either too much of a gap or too little, messing up the clutch and causing under-performing a/c. That may sound somewhat intimidating, but it's pretty simple. Good luck.

thanks for the help. thats what i was hoping is that its pretty simple. im planning on doing it this wekend when the part comes in.
thanks

You will need a little bitty pully puller - the kind with 3 small bolts, similar to a steering wheel puller, but made specifically for this purpose. You will also need a decent pair of snap ring pliers to get to that guy. When I bought a replacement clutch, it came with the tool. If you are getting just the bearing, it probably won't. Maybe you can borrow one from Autozoo. Also keep track of the shims when you pull it apart.

It's an easy job with the right tools.

Hey all...have a similar problem with my jeep and can't seem to find the bearing kits anywhere. I've tried autozone online and a few other places (online stores) but can't find it. I will try the dealership on monday and maybe napa auto tomorrow. Any other suggestions would be helpful

the bearing you can get from oreilly's along with the install kit. im on the hunt for the pully puller.
thanks for everyone help

when the bearing locked up was it making a noise? the sound reminds me of a womp womp womp womp womp womp... for lack of a better way to try to describe it... just curious as to if we have the same issue that ive been putting off fixing for 8 monthes.

the sound that I am getting is more of a steady scraping. Not a nails on the chalk board skreech but more of a constant metal on metal sound. It's loud enough for me to notice at idle and a dead stop. Mine xj is a 99 with a 4.0

How'd you do with this? I'll be attempting it soon. I do all of my own work but have never had the need to be into the AC clutch area.

My Auto Zone shows the part number as Ready Aire #1963...retail $43.99

http://www.autozone.com/selectedZip...itialvehicleId,2578202/shopping/selectZip.htm

They have all of the tools as loaners to do the job.

Thanks,

if you have digital camera access can you post pictures? nice score on finding the bearing! most people can't find the bearing and just get a new compressor. mike

I'll see what I can do Mike. At the very least I'll write up a detailed procedure for you guys.
