9" to 10" rear drum upgrade?

I have a 94 2wd XJ with 9" drums in the rear. In searching for a nice performance brake shoe, I have found nothing, but the 10" drum has a Porterfield pad available. I'd love to run this...so is it easy to swap the 10" drum stuff on? One caveat - I've already welded the rear diff up pretty good, and I don't think I'll be able to remove the axles ever again.

Are you stuck with drums by class rules or just want the stock look? the disk conversion would be about the same amount of work with better results. For even better braking upgrade. Replace your booster with a late model XJ booster.
As for the welded def. You can work on the wheel end. Cut grind the drum flange off but I's not going to be a bolt on no mater what.

I'm not stuck with drums, but I've done the disc swap before, and I can't say it was worth the money. I ended up spending another $300 for discs, calipers, pads, and misc hardware.

AMC vintage XJ D44 brake backing plates and brakes (look up '87-'88)

you'll need to re-drill the backing plates to match your axle (neither the D35 or 8.25" are the same) and in your case, you'll need to split the backing plate to get around the permanent axle "upgrade"

10"X2.5" brakes were the big-uns

For pure stopping power. I go with you on that one for sure. But for the dudes with big tires and like the go faster type of offing/racing. You may see some brake fade resistance with a disk.
Many just like the bragging rights too.

Good news! Porterfield will make me a set of shoes for the 9" drums for $160

do the disc conversion.... or you can go to the junkyard and get a 8.8 with disc's already that way you have a beefy rear end with disc brakes
