89 Comanche build thread

for the most part it works on carpet/mats as well. so something to consider if you wat to change the color of the headliner or carpet and not replace it.

Or dash? :dunno:

that's it's intended purpose, to redye interior parts that have been repaired or swapped. For larger pieces like that it's going to take more than one coat to get the dye even looking. Plan on 3, then the large areas don't have splotches or color variations.

I cna't remember the name, the local body shpo supply place will have it.

I know that eastwood sells it mail order, and I think duplicolor has a vinyl line as well.

Here's a link to the eastwood stuff.

prep is critical, the vinyl must be cleaned with a solvent. Many light coats works better than one heavy coat for color uniformity.
I never used any adhesion promotor or primer and it never came off in the 3 years I had the car after I replaced the panel.

I found out about this stuff after someone broke into my car and destroyed the center console when they ripped out my crappy factory radio. I couldn't find another in my interior color, so I pulled a tan one out of the junkyard and dyed it gray. It never scratched or anything. I thought it was about the best thing ever. I also used it on a bunch of ABS plastic parts when I was modding computer cases, regular paint would scratch off, the dye seeps in, you have to scratch it deep to get to the base color.

Edit:
I did a google search for "vinyl dye" and found it. The stuff I used was made by VHT.

thanks! im gonna need to that stuff to dye my headrests. i just took the covers of my seats to get new ones upholstered out that vinyl/canvas stuff they use for boat covers. the lady gave me a great price, Ill be sure to take pics of them when i get them and post em here. I dont get them back till the third though, because of the holiday.

small update, but Im pretty pumped about it. I literally just got this mocked up, and it still needs a little bit of touch up. I plan on adding peice of flat stock on the other side so there is more leverage for going into reverse, and to add more strength. anyway, heres the shift linkage I fabricated. it works great!

told ya it could be done!

that's super trick. If mine did not have a full factory console I would be stealing that idea. The stock shifter is horrible.

thanks! I didnt leave the stock tranny in it long enough to judge it, but I imagine that something like this would work for most applications, I tell you what, it sure works great. I didnt expect it to work so smooth the first go around, I was all ready for a trial and error period. haha, I accually bought WAAAAY to much flat stock and round bar, expecting to do this 4 maybe 5 times before I was satisfied.

anything in that stock location is horrible because the shifter lever is 2 feet long and bent back to clear the dash.

The AX-15 is not exactly what I would call quick shifting, but I tihnk most of it is in the sock shift assembly. meh, it's not like mine is going to see more than 2nd or 3rd gear ever again anyway since it's trailer queen.

well, my motto has always been, keep it pegged 'till parts start flyin....i guess it doesnt matter when your planning on welding cluster gears together...with your foot. hahaha, just me. anyway, little update. well, more like a pre-update. I pick up my seats from the upholster on the third. I dropped of the seat covers of to a lady who makes custom fit boat covers. ill let you all know how they fit when i get 'em, and of course Ill post pictures. (the factory vinyl ones that acually go over the guts of the seat...not cheapo autozone hello kitty ones or anything)

Panels are okay, bout the only thing that is staying is the cab the rest is gonna be fiber glass. Should be ordering some of those parts soon. Rocker panels are on their way, other than that i've jet be doing little bits of body work on the doors and the cab Nothing serious

are you doing factory rockers?

My rockers are shot, it's likely they'll be replaced with some 2x6x.25

ya shoulda gone with rock rails instead...

that looks shortbed.

I have some rock rails that would likely fit that with minimum fab work. You'd have to cut the legs off and make new ones, as they were welded for my longbed.
