89 Cherokee dies after filling gas tank

Nope

Saw something go screwy with a buddies charcoal canister once, darned thing filled near full with fuel and when it purged, would dump a whole bunch of raw fuel into the intake? Really strong gas smell. Only seemed to happen with a full tank.

Sometimes my rig dies as i pull out of the gas station only Any body heard of this before?

haha acutally mine used to do it pretty often. I am not sure if I ever figured out what the cause was, I always assumed the idle was too low and I liked to blip the throttle to hear my 40 series flowmaster rumble. It would always die before leaving the parking lot of the station. Since I have taken my 89 XJ out of the daily driving loop it does not see much action, I dont know if the problem still exists or not.

Too funny.

You might have crud/sediment sitting at the bottom of the tank. When you fill it up, the sediment gets stirred up and this may clog the sock in the fuel pump pick-up and block the fuel filter downstream.
If that's the case, the only solution is to remove the tank and have it cleaned.

My 87 did this occasionally, also with the strong gas smell that 8Mud mentions. I always guessd it had something to do with fuel getting into the vent system, but I never figured out how, and it wasn't consistent.

Along the lines that Dr:Dyno mentioned, had a problem with a Dodge PU, would just suddenly crap out. Narrowed it down to fuel. To make a long story short, when I drained and dopped the tank, to fix a fuel sender, found a hand sized leaf in there. Haven´t the slightest idea how it got in there.

Thats easy, GOT KIDS, mine used my then new $700 sony hi-fi vcr for a parking garage for matchbox cars. Quit working one nite so down to the workbench, pull the cover and theres a firetruck and an ambulance inside... alot neater than the P&B sandwich that was there a couple of months later when my daughter thought the vcr might be hungry after a 5 hour marathon of sesame street tapes. What a $ucken mess that was...

Could be that the gas cap is bad too or a line is plugged and you are drawing a vacumn on the tank.

hope you find out....mine stinks of raw fuel when tank is low and taking left turns.....checked for leaks, replaced filter.....still stinks....never filled tank, always afraid it might fall out.....oh and 8mud....I wondered where that leaf went...lol
