84 jeep Cherokee, 4 banger ?????

My 85 XJ 4 banger gets 34 MPGs!!!!party1:

that sounds too good to be true, whats the catch? do you have the 4 cal deisel in there that is so hard to find?

Your '85 that gets 34 mpg is a stock, gasoline, carbureted (sp) 2.5L?

No I run mine on peanut oil, LOL....JK, Diesel. But I have known HO 2.5 owners that got about 27 MPG, and I once got as little a 6 mpg with my 87 4.0

If he buys it, the first upgrade will be a Carburator upgrade, and gut the old junk. Emissions are exempt here on 87 and older vehicles.

Mine has a 1982 Nissan SD-22 Diesel engine transplant

I need to hear from those who have one of these (Gas 2.5 L, 4 banger 84 XJ carb'd, or maybe 84-87?), and or recall how to debug them still!!! We bought. It tries to run, starts and runs 2-3 seconds on a carburetor cleaner aerosol prime just fine, but does not seem to be getting fuel. Have not touched the Carburetor yet.

We have a new fuel filter and fuel pump ready to install. Will look for vacuum leaks on the fuel supply line from gas tank to fuel pump, but the fuel filter on this odd ball seems to have a built in check valve and return line to gas tank or??? That I am not familiar with.

Also, I need help finding the old 84 jeep 4 banger trouble-help threads here, they seem to be hard to find or Google?

i have a carb'd 4 banger and i honestly enjoy it. it gets great mpgs with 35's but i am geared also. i just installed a msd 6al ignition setup today and already notice better idle and alittle more low end power....

My rig stated out as a carb'd 85 2.5L. I upgraded to the 86+ TBI system, and yes I got in the high 20's with 35's and gearing. It wheeled anything I needed here in Colorado, but didn't pull the high mountain passes at 75mph.

The most common problem with those is the automatic choke. The ground gets flakey. Wire it wide open then try and fire it up. The carb is actually part computerized. The jet is computer controlled and they gum up. Remember that these have a fuel filter and since the pressure is low, they clog easy. As preventive measures, I would just go ahead and swap the filter and put a can of BG44K in the tank.

I may still have an old FSM floating around here somewher for that.

Please tell me more!!!!! I think I can track down any simple ground issues. It fires up good and strong like a beast right away, with every prime. And multiple cranks after the first start do nothing, until primed again, so it is not getting fuel, but is getting good spark right away. Figured that out so far.

Computerized carb??? Tell me more!!!!

Electric choke????

Electric or mechanical "wire" it open????

Thanks for the heads up on computer controlled jet!!! I had no idea!!!!!

Like I said, the fuel filter and fuel pump will be swapped out next, before anything else is done.

computerized carb? is that the same one used on the 87 YJ? Ford computer?

I may actually have a spare for it if it is. It's been sitting on my porch for 6 months, but seemed fairly well coated in rubber internally so it may still work.

I also have a used 85 and new 85 computer for the spark control (My 85 is diesel now), but Is it also a control of the fuel somehow???? Or is there another electronic (computer) control over fuel??

This is interesting!!!!!

No idea. It came out of a friend's 87 YJ with the BBD e-carb and Ford computer that we first nutter bypassed (he already had a weber swapped onto it by someone else) then 4.0/EFI swapped.

Look into the nutter bypass if it's got its own ICM somewhere plus the sensor in the distributor. We ended up bypassing it since it was acting up all kinds of awful, probably had a bad sensor reading or something, you just splice 2 twisted pairs together so the ICM and distributor pickup talk directly instead of going through the computer, then add a few more wires and you can simply unplug the computer, set the timing better (removing the computer means you have to adjust it a few degrees one way or the other, forget which) and forget about it. He got better gas mileage after we did this.

Then I threw a 4.0, custom wiring harness/EFI, AX15, etc in it for him. It already drives better than it did beforehand.

This is all how I ended up with the spare Ford computer rotting on the back porch. Got a bale of unnecessary wiring harness crap from the YJ and the XJ donor harness, too, but might need that.

BTW, we bought this rig and got it running!!!

What is system sentry? Is the ones with all the temp sensors on the difs and trans, ect that had the lights under the clock?
84-86 catalog says that these transmissions were available in the XJ:

(no mention of engine or 2WD/4WD status here - assuming 4cyl 4wd)
84-85 T4, with system sentry 5300 2269
84 T4, with system sentry 5300 1547
85 T4, without system sentry 5300 1548
84 T5, without system sentry 5300 1551
84 T5, without system sentry 5300 1552
84-85 T5, with system sentry 5300 2270

84 AX4, with system sentry 5300 1565
85 AX4, with system sentry 5300 2264
85-86 2WD AX4, with system sentry 5300 1670
86 2WD AX4, 5300 4250
86 4WD AX4, 5300 4249
86 4WD AX4, 5300 2264

84 AX5, with system sentry 5300 1566
85-86 AX5, (2.5/I4 or 2.8/V6) 2WD, with system sentry 5300 1671
86 AX5, (2.5/I4 or 2.8/V6) 2WD 5300 3386
85-86 AX5, (2.5/I4 or 2.8/V6) 4WD, with system sentry 5300 2265
86 AX5, (2.5/I4) 4WD 5300 3385
85 AX5, (2.1TD) 4WD, with system sentry 5300 1190
86 AX5, (2.1TD) 2WD 5300 3388
86 AX5, (2.1TD) 4WD 5300 3387

:wow::wow::wow::wow::wow:

I don't think they had NEARLY enough random usage of transmissions nor options in those years! I think they probably could have had another 4-5 part numbers for the same year range and engine options transmissions without possibly causing ANY confusion!

Yeah, that's the one.

I just paid £400 for a 95 2.5. been stood for 16 months fired up straight away with a new battery slight rust on one rocker but apart from that a really tidy motor the bonus is, it's got a multipoint LPG ststem fitted 2 years ago for about £1600.. what a result.

Nice!!!

Replaced the mechanical fuel pump (runs of the cam shaft), replaced the oil to get the gas out that the fuel pump had dumped into the oil, diaphragm had busted, changed the fuel filter (it is an odd ball fuel filter, three connections to it!!!), replaced the dead battery, and replaced the ignition lock key mechanism.

Kinda lucky I had worked on the old rigs 70's, and discovered the gas in the oil early on. It started right up with starter fluid, but would not keep running, so I knew it was a fuel problem. Caught the gas in oil issue right off. Rock auto had a close out sale, dirt cheap on the parts we needed too!!!!

Test drove it!! It was alive!!!!

I was a little shocked the carburetor and all the vacuum-EPA junk on it all still worked. Lots of power!!!

Still needs brake work. Maybe a clutch slave cylinder. Doing other minor stuff, but so far we got it running and driveable, including the 4x4.

Paid $450 for it.:laugh3:
